Flaming: What it is and what it isn't
    #2808543 - 06/19/04 12:13 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I know this isn't directly related to Politics, Activism, or Law, but from some of the arguments I've seen around here, I thought it would be a helpful guide and save us some time. Flaming is where you insult a member on this board, either through name-calling(i.e. idiot, moron, imbecile) or exclamations(i.e. "Fuck you!" "Eat shit!" "Go fuck yourself!"). Note that it is NOT flaming to insult someone's IDEA or ARGUMENT. For example, saying someone's argument is lame or weak is not flaming, though it would be bad form to do so without explaining why. Also, name-calling that describes what the person is doing isn't necessarily flaming. For example, if the person is lying and you call them a liar, that is not flaming.

Examples of flaming:

"Fuck off, asshole!"

"Shut up, moron!"

"You're so fucking stupid!"

What isn't flaming:

"Weak. Show me where I said that."

"If you insist on lying, I cannot continue this argument with you."

"Your argument is nothing more than simple-minded collectivist propaganda."

Hope this helps.

I'll just say this:
some people here have become quite adept at engaging in vicious personal attacks without flaming

the forum rules are a farce

i'd personally rather be flamed than be libelled, but libel is apparently permissible while flaming is not.

you call them a liar, that is not flaming

As long as you provide the example of the lie and say why you consider it a lie. Just saying "You liar" in every post is obviously flaming.

Then you of course will from now on provide verifiable examples of the lies made by those you label as liars or as dishonest. Glad to hear it.

Well OK, but only since you asked.

Lies, dishonesty, failure to admit error even with large amounts of proof.

And yet you would defend to your last breath the right of corporations to make children work in desperately unsafe conditions, to intimidate them and refuse them the right to form a union and to pay them as little as they can get away with. (you know full well he didn't say that)

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...part=5&vc=1

Except that you've spent the last year insisting you needed "proof" that WMD arn't there before you'll accept it (you know full well I've never claimed they have them)

http://www.shroomery.org/archives/showfl...rt=all&vc=1

And just before that you were still insisting there were WMD in Iraq...that's just the two that spring to mind. (see above)

http://www.shroomery.org/archives/showfl...rt=all&vc=1

Actually they don't. As the supreme court has made clear the second amendment applies to well-regulated militias only. Which is why the NRA are too frightened to bring a legal case on the basis of their interpretation of the second amendment. They know perfectly well they would lose. (these have been shown with multiple links to be false)

http://www.shroomery.org/archives/showfl...ev=#Post1756266

Slavery was formally abolished in England in 1772. It was abolished in the colonies in 1807. (as was shown in that thread, it was not)

http://www.shroomery.org/archives/showfl...part=5&vc=1

I'd continue but lunch awaits.

you know full well he didn't say that

He defended the right of corporations to offer jobs in conditions that would make an american worker die of apoplexy. What were these conditions that would make an american worker die?

Except that you've spent the last year insisting you needed "proof" that WMD arn't there before you'll accept it (you know full well I've never claimed they have them)

You have spent the last year demanding "proof" before you accept WMD arn't in Iraq. Do you deny this?

And just before that you were still insisting there were WMD in Iraq

So saying there are no WMD in Iraq is a lie?

As the supreme court has made clear the second amendment applies to well-regulated militias

True.

these have been shown with multiple links to be false

Lying bullshit.

Slavery was formally abolished in England in 1772

1772
In Britain, Lord Chief Justice Mansfield rules that English law does not support slavery, thus laying the basis for freeing England?s 15,000 slaves.

Well done. You've had to go back 15 months to find my last error. Not a bad record is it. Still couldn't call this a lie.

I'd continue but lunch awaits.

Hurry and get back. You've got to find your first lie yet. How long did it take you to come up with this pathetic list?

Wow, very interesting. You say something, without intending (so you say) for it to decieve people, yet it isn't "true", but it's not a lie. So I'm assuming that when I search your posts about Bush, I won't hear anything about "lies" of WMD's, right? Unless you can PROVE that he knew what he was saying was false, then he, just like you, are "wrong", and you "[s]till couldn't call this a lie." Right?

Well it's no more a lie than pinksharkmark bringing up the debunked list of "17,000" scientists to support his argument about global warming. None of us are infallible, doesn't mean he was lying.

I won't hear anything about "lies" of WMD's, right

The WMD that don't exist?

Unless you can PROVE that he knew what he was saying was false,

I've no problem with him saying WMD are there until the cows come home. The problem I have with him is the launching of an invasion and killing thousands of innocent people on the basis of it.
