Building terrarium tent, question about parts UPDATE! *PIC*
    #2808492 - 06/19/04 11:14 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Where or what do i look for when i go to home depot in reguards to plastic? i need a durable clear plastic to use when building a humidity tent, made with a pvc frame.

Im just curious if the sell the plastic as something else, like a tempory window or something. What would i ask a salesman to look for?

You might be better served to get one of those pre-fab greenhouse tents.
They are cheap (around 30 duckets), and have zippered enclosures and adjustable shelves. They house planters or mortar trays real well I've heard.

If you're down for the DIY (aren't we all?), ask one of the Home Depot zombies for "seamless polyethylene sheeting."
A good thickness (greater than 3 mil) is best.
It is commonly sold to use as a protective covering for floors/general construction. Check the paint aisle. It is similar to those thin drop cloths used during painting, but is *much* more durable.

FOAF had trouble in joining the seams though. She'd love to know if anyone has an easy, functional method for this.

I was planning on using a hot glue gun to join the plastic. Quick, easy and very strong.

Do they sell those greenhouse tents at DIY stores?

here it is! its 22in wide, 17in deep, and 27in to the peak. Its hard to see the hardware cloth in there, but it makes two seperate levels. PLENTY of room now!! It may not look like but but i know its air tight, i used about 5 sticks of glue haha....

Believe it or not thats almost a whole 20ft of 1/2in pipe.

The door is made of several flaps to keep in humidity. The top flap comes down first, then the bottom comes up to keep in water. There is also a middle flap to further seal. The flaps are held by velcro.

$15 material built in two hours. The botton is just wrapped in the plastic, ill worry about how ill drain it later haha.

I used 4mil plastic for painters. It seems heavy enough, i wish i could get the 6mil but they wanted $20 for huge roll i would never use.

i also just thought of trying to use a heat gun to stretch the plastic out and make it a littel prettier....

That's brilliant dude thanx for the top idea!
You could just mist regularly or try a bucket of water and H202 with an aquarium heater in it and just change the water occaisionally.

oh, sorry, i mean i already use an ultrasonic humidifier, i was just wondering if perlite would help that much with stabilization.

The climate is apparently different from the cooler because i had 3 pins, 1 on each cake, up a couple inches. When placed in the new greenhouse they seemed to slowed way down. Oh well, theyll adjust eventually.

Its been cool here latey, and the temps in the chamber have fallen to 68f, so that isnt helping much either

Nice tent man! Could haev went a bit bigger

Pearlite cant hurt bus since you have the ultrazonc oyu should have more then enough humidity. If you were to put pearlite in i would put a pan at the bottom filled with pearlite. Rather then filling the leak prone plastic with wet pearlite. Not that its not watertight now, just if you ever poke or rip a hole it would suck.

its plenty big for me, i dont grow for others, just my hobby for me. I think a smaller chamber is easier to hold a certain climate too.

The plastic is actually very durable. The hot glue from the glue gun doesnt normally melt it, though it did happen a couple times. If i did use perlite i would use it in a pan to help with cleanliness.

So for it does not seem to need any other humidity, the cakes are pinning now. I run the humidifier now every 4 hours for 1 minute at a time.

Well simply beacuse of the volume of air in larger conainers there more stable with temps and humidity.

I didnt glue the pvc together at all. If you press the pipe together the couplings and elbows hold tight as it is. I can change the design anytime i want, specially since i have a whole 10ft of pipe left. But the tent is working perfectly, im especially proud of how well my doors work- that was the trickest part, at least to think of.
