Schizophrenia-autism misdiagnosis potential
    #28078376 - 12/01/22 04:03 PM (1 year, 1 month ago)

How often does this happen?

Anyone with experience?

Paranoia can be psychosocial maladjustment. Delusions, etc... aggressiveness.

Can anyone go into detail about how much the two have in common?

If you're autist which medications are you on?

I have Asperger's.  I don't take any medications.

From what I understand, misdiagnosis between autism and schizophrenia was far more prevalent up to probably 1980. Many autistic children got diagnosed with "childhood schizophrenia". As social withdrawal is a symptom of schizophrenia, they believed that autistic children that were severely socially withdrawn were showing an early onset of schizophrenia. They understand a lot more about both schizophrenia and autism than they used to and it isn't common for them to be confused anymore. Schizophrenia can cause some deficits with respect to social interaction, but it is a lot different than those caused by autism.

There aren't really many similarities except "social disconnect" and visibly abnormal behavior (common in severe autism and people having psychosis or a thought disorder from schizophrenia). Schizotypal disorder is a condition that is on the same spectrum as schizophrenia, but without the delusions and hallucinations. It causes some social disconnect as well, but the characteristic trait of the condition is "magical and symbolic thinking" while autism usually produces more rigid and literal thought processes. People with schizotypal make connections between things that are not logically connected (at least to most people) and sometimes have a very metaphorical or superstitious style of thinking (from my understanding).

I was misdiagnosed with ADHD my entire childhood. I think that was the more common misdiagnosis in the 1990-2010 period. I took adderall for many years. Even when I was taking it as prescribed it always felt like a low dose of speed and moderately euphoric to me, which is less common in people with ADHD. I had really strong cravings for it and constantly obsessed over it when my doctor was talking about reducing my use at one point. I developed a tendency to abuse it and go on several day binges with it. I was buying several scripts worth from people I know and often taking 15 30mg pills in a couple days. I no longer take it at all because it felt really taxing to my body(who knows how much that increases your chances of an early stroke or other cardio event?)  and I wouldn't be able to keep a job with that pattern.

To be diagnosed with schizophrenia or autism you have to show a minimum amount of listed symptoms. I'm not 100% but I think those symptoms are mostly easily seperated but some may be similar. If you fulfill the criteria for either illness the doctor have to investigate a possible differential diagnoses before actually diagnosing you with anything. I know autism and ADHD can be a common differential diagnosis which doctors have to take into consideration but not sure about autism and schizophrenia.

If someone doesn't feel right with ones diagnose it's not wrong to get a second opionion from a different psychaitrist because this is not like diagnosing someone with cancer which you can 100% prove. If you're diagnosed with schizophrenia but really have autism that medicination for schizophrenia is completely uneccessary unless you have some other paranoia/delusion. There is no general medication against autism. I don't know if you're talking about yourself but if someone has schizophrenia and suspect they have autism and are misdiagnosed, you should never quit any medicine by yourself. Suspicion that something is wrong could be a sign of paranoia, which is a symptom of schizophrenia. Always talk with your doctor because if that person is wrong, it could cause an episode that ends badly.

Well.

I believe that im haunted by sss...by sssss. By ssssss. Okay well. Iykyk....

So like ive been diagnosed schizophrenic among depression and bipolar. However, i never. Never. Liked the skitz meds... i tried them and things got worse.. the bipolar meds have worked wonders in my life.

Bipolar is really shitty. To me really shitty. Im an emotional filled scorpio. And when i cant feel feelings the way that i want to be feeling them... im fukd.

Once i got on bipolar meds things in my life began to be much more clear. As far as autism and the rest go idk... anything is worth a shot when you are not able to be you.

Wish you luck on ur journey.

It's kind of a shame that autism/aspergers doesn't have any medications for treatment. I am also on the aspergers end of the spectrum, and frequently feel paranoid, prone to somewhat delusional thoughts, emotional disregulation, etc. All things OP mentioned.

I am not sure if this is the case for anyone else, but I hyper focus on my mental health at times, likely because I am a bit of a hypochondriac too

Taking a step back, focusing on my breath, and realising that a lot of my emotional  discomfort is likely just anxiety driven, gives me some daily peace of mind.

Not saying this is the case for anyone here, just something I felt like sharing in the context of the post, in the hopes that it may help, even for just a day  :sun:

I have heard of risperidone and aripiprazole sometimes provided in people experiencing autism spectrum disorder symptoms. If you have access to a psychiatrist, you should ask them about it and see if they recommend it.

Thanks for sharing stuff about yourselves.

I think my mum has it a little so I figure it's trickled down a bit. (autism)

But my dad was defs insane, lol.

Autism is mainly how the cortex, the outer layer, of the brain grows, the grey part, or it's how a bit of it grows. I was kinda blank in high school lol but it was getting better until apparently I went schizophrenic dosing weed.

Paranoia can also be unresolved emotions from rape etc. Something I can't get across.

In this case I can process the emotion myself. I just need to focus and kind of feel what I'm supressing when I go about my day. I've almost puked a few times. So disgusting.
