Possible new species of Psilocybe (Pics)
    #2806927 - 06/18/04 09:21 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Damn. Never thought I'd say this one, but I think I might found a new species of Psilocybe mushroom.

Here's the details:

I found some of these little mushrooms a while back and took a pic of them(put pic in a previous post). They looked Psilocybe-esque but I just thought "nah, can't be possible." I went down to the same place today to find more of these mushrooms growing. I picked some just for the hell of it, to check for a brusing reaction. To my surprise, they bruised blue. I was fucking amazed to say the least.

These mushrooms are growing from rotting sticks.
They have caps from .5cm to 1cm (tiny mushrooms).
Stipes range from 1-2cm and have a scaly appearance.
The caps range from light brown to dark brown (sometimes fading), slightly viscid, and acutely umbonate.
Gills are a orange brown color.
Gill attachment seems to be subdecurrent, but I'll have to check that one with a magnifiying glass.
A veil is present on younger speciemens, but no remnants remain on large ones.
A spore print is in the works and should be finished by tomorrow morning.

Here are the pics I have:

Those definitely do look to be Psilocybes and the bruising is very apparent. Another Southwestern woodlover huh? They sure don't seem to resemble bluefoots at all and those scaly sides are unique. Nice, keep us updated.

Peace - @cro

Definately not weiliis. They appear to be full grown when the cap is barely a centimeter wide.

Here's some more pics of a some more recently picked mushrooms:

Possibly Psilocybe atlantis, mj or some minor mall ariations of P. weilii.

The formoer is a little closer to P. atlantis, however the fibrillous scales on the stem resemble those associaed with P. wiii.

Hehehe Psilocybe gumbius

I don't have a single clue, probably in there with the P. atlantis and similar new species the lizard king and others have found in the past year or two..

Definately get LKs opinion. Awesome find, find more!

MJ what kind of criteria would be necessary if that would have been a new find?

when i9 was hunting weilli's i found these as well

i thought they were tiny weilli's but the enviroment didnt fit

i found alot of them growing from pine straw used as mulch in buisness parks.

i found albino ones growing under the straw where light couldnt hit.

they wre solid white and bruised blue

like i said i thought they were tiny weill's

good find!

I'm going to be sending out a few prints/dried specimens to some people to have them take a look at it.
