What supplements/vitamins do you take?
    #28067498 - 11/24/22 01:24 PM (1 year, 2 months ago)

I take multi vitamins and garlic extract pills. Planning on getting glucosamine for my aging joints.

I'm not convinced that supplements do anything for you.  I'm also convinced that vitamins do do jack shit for you.  If you eant it, get it from food.

I partially disagree. Some supplements - the good ones - are merely just drugs derived from natural sources. This is especially true of those supplements which contain flavones or terpenes. They compare favorably to the stuff given by the pharmacy for depression - and actually they are better because their side effects are much less.

Here is a list of a few herbs or supplements proven to pass scientific mouse models of depression just as well as conventional prescription drugs for that condition, SSRIs-

Bacopa, moringa, pomegranate

And that's just three I like that I was able to search in a few minutes. There are hundreds of such studies. You can say that they're just mouse studies and they don't prove anything; maybe they aren't very definitive, but the studies do prove these work at least as powerful effects on the nervous system since they're better than placebo.

In humans the appropriate studies simply have not been done to see if they'd help in humans, since anyone can grow an herb, they're in the 'public domain' and as a result there's no financial incentive to fund a clinical trial of it. However, I have read a few trials in humans that show positive results from trials for anxiety or depression for natural products. They are mostly small trials, so again people will doubt them, but they are very suggestive. It's not like they failed a trial; more like no one did the legwork yet for more formal research.

See these studies for example, controlled small scale trials, of ashwangandha and rhodiola.

In another sense I agree with your post: that this all could be gotten from food. Many of the herbs which contain these powerful natural anti-inflammatory products are simply foods. Why do we package it as a little powder instead of simply eating more of that food? For example, if pomegranate really does alleviate depression, at least in a minor way, it could be a good part of a balanced diet.

The increasing flow of nervous disorders surely relates to people eating more processed foods and thus getting less beneficial compounds from the diets - not just vitamins but natural anti-inflammatory compounds, which are found less abundantly in bleached flour than in whole grains, less in corn syrup than in whole corn. We make ourselves sick through a deficient diet.

I take a multi-vitamin, and vitamin D3 daily.

As needed I supplement with iron, and take ashwagandha powder with my chamomile tea before bed in times of high stress.

While I agree that if you're eating a balanced diet all of the time, you shouldn't need to take vitaminsn the fact of the matter is some people do not have access to healthful nutrient rich foods depending on their location, access to transportation, and finacial restraints. Furthermore, some folks will require supplementation due to conditions that inhibit absorption, making it more difficult for them to absorb vitamins adequately though food alone.

Oral vitamin D does nothing, you are wasting your money. It's a scam.

I take B vitamins for a bit of a boost sometimes, and if I'm feeling run down and C with Zinc. Some complex plant extracts like tumeric have value too.

For the most part it is documented that "supplements" don't really do much, if anything, for ordinary healthy people. It's only those with serious medical conditions that benefit from them. Usually because they are unable to consume or digest food properly.

Vitamin d does nothing in what context?

I'm talking about maintaining vitamin D levels within normal limits during the winter months. What are you talking about?

I used to work at a clinic in an area where vitamin D deficiency is extremely common, as in we frequently saw lab values indicating vitamin D deficiencies in our patients. We saw lab values increase with oral supplementation routinely. When I say "we saw" I mean that I viewed the results myself and contacted patients to notify them of said results time and time again. (Although twice I had to tell patients to lay off because they were taking obscene amounts at the advice of some nutty "wellness advicate" in the area who was telling patients to take upwards of 20,000 units a day.)

So, if you're saying that the nutrition, anatomy & physiology, health assessment, and the other various courses I've taken over the years at accredited universities have provided me with dishonest information regarding vitamin D deficiency and the effectiveness of supplementation to rectify that, I would certainly like to see the studies.

Every physician I have ever worked with would probably also be interested in this data as well so they can stop checking vitamin d levels altogether and discourage their patients from utilizing oral supplementation.

There's nothing like 5-10 minutes of sun to solve vitamin D deficiency, as after all it is not truly a vitamin, something that we need to eat, but a hormone produced by the body.

Vitamin D deficiency is a symptom of bad health, not a cause.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/khn.org/news/how-michael-holick-sold-america-on-vitamin-d-and-profited/amp/
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/stevensalzberg/2022/08/01/stop-taking-vitamin-d-already/amp/

I was listening to a professor on radio this year with even further research showing that it truly does nothing in terms of health to supplement except in extreme medical conditions... but I'm on a phone right now and don't have access to research papers here like I do on my computer.

But the evidence is there, and even more recent evidence with more compelling results.

Thanks for taking the time to give some sources! They were very informative and I'll have to pick my Doc's brains about it at my upcoming physical. I'm not in an area where I can get 15 minutes of sunlight every day in the winter. I'm in school now so I can get outside in daylight more than typical winters, but once I go back to work full time in January or February I'll be driving into work when it's dark and coming home when it's dark. I still go outside and walk or snowshoe or ski but, just in the dark. So before I was in school, and worked full time, every winter all winter I would be indoors during daylight hours most days.

Then on my off days or lunch hours it's too cold to expose more than part of your face until April because it's typically below freezing but it easily gets below zero F when wind chill is factored in. THEN you might not even get any sunlight anyways if it is snowing or very overcast.

That's why people supplement where I live if they do not have a UV lamp. The lack of light plays trick on your mind, too, so people tend to get depressed and neglect their nutrition more than in summer months, plus fresh nutritious food is more affordable in the summer.

What I will discuss with my Doc is that my diet is better than it has been in years due to increased financial stability, depression management, and addiction recovery, and I see that with what my diet is currently, I likely will have adequate intake through the winter with my diet, but that has simply not always been then case.

Thanks again for taking the time.

When I was living in a place where there was bugger all light for half the year I had a UV lamp as well. Significantly changed my quality of life. It's funny how something as simple as 10 minutes of light changes your world.

In fact the government there gave those sun lamps for free as it was such an issue, depression, drug use, social instability and all the things that go with lack of light for half the year. Lamps turn out cheaper than D supplementation very quickly and actually address the issue, not just the symptom.

I'm glad to hear you're living in happier times, too.

Meh. Supplementation is really not that expensive. A bottle lasts me a season and takes up way less space than a UV lamp and it's a fat soluble vitamin so it's not like you just pee it out. It's just a different way of getting enough vitamin D in when you can't synthesize it adequately during the dark days and aren't getting enough with dietary intake alone. Both methods address deficiencey

I take Alpha GPC.  It feels like a cleaner caffeine.  Really helps with mental energy and focus.

I take a multivitamin, B12, magnesium, calcium+VitD, and fish oil.

I am sitting somewhere in the middle of they do nothing and they do something minor. Because of neurological issues that run in my family, I always make sure I am taking fish oil. Some genuinely good studies support its long term effectiveness under certain circumstances.

Everything else though

Same, with the exception of not being able to get it from the foods I ingest.

About a year ago I was a drinker (alcohol), I went to do blood work for my physical check up, I turned up with vitamin B and D deficiencies, high bilirubin, and pre-diabetic.

Gave up alcohol.

Fast forward, my recent blood work came to almost perfect. Still a little low on vitamin D but that's about it!

For a year I took milk thistles, cod liver oil, vitamin e, cordyceps and lions mane.
I feel really good these days.

The problem is, our food is devoid of nutrients. Moderm farming practices have destroyed our soils. Te food we eat is said to be 75 to 80 % less nutritious than the food our grandparents ate. It's clear you can't be reached, you're convinced you "you're aware". F*ck the biohacker movement. F*ck the tons of new research data on nutritional biochemistry. F*ck people like Dr David Sinclair because hey!!! you believe vitamins suck!!! LOL!!!

I take 24 supplements my doctor recommended I take. Five contain vitamins and minerals, the rest are extracts of compounds found in food. I'm f*cking old. I'm not saying exactly how old I am but I'm considered old from a chronological standpoint. Yet I illiterately feel and perform as if I'm in my 30's again. Testing revealed my biological age is late 30's so, yeah, I believe taking the proper supplements is one of the best bio hacks out there. And by the way, my doctor has an MD in internal medicine from NYU and a PhD is nutritional biochemistry from MIT so I'm going to continue placing my complete faith in his advice than hacks sitting in their moms basement...

You should consider taking both forms of K2 because you're taking Vitamin D and especially since you're taking calcium. Just trying to give you a heads up brother because you're asking for trouble. Don't believe a word I say, look into this for yourself.
