Small Strains?/Underbed Grow
#28060246 - 11/19/22 03:07 PM (2 years, 1 month ago) |

Seeking a small-medium strain for short tubs that are about 7-9" tall such as the taller end of sweater boxes, shoeboxes, and underbed bins. Sub is aged manure w/ verm, thinking of going about 2.5" deep
I'm seriously considering this opaque Rubbermaid 10gal (40qt) for stealth grow, with waterproof LED strip on inside lid. Would appreciate tips for holes. Would like to use polyfil. Should I do 1" or smaller 1/4" holes? I would use black polyfil to be more discrete and block light escape but will be somewhere hard to see, just don't want them glowing with light.

I like Escondido ... am about to try Texas Yellow Caps in shoeboxes.
Mazatapec tends to be smaller n I've seen some really nice pics on here of Maz in shoeboxes n other short bins looking pretty happy but mixed potency feedback. This will be in poo tho.
Afraid to try KSSS because some posters seem to get frustrated with the mutants n I'm looking for something that would do well in MS until I clone something out later on. Don't rly wanna do PE rn but have seen some lovely choad pics.
Anything else come to mind? Any tips for short mushrooms?
Thanks

Very Cool.
Are these slow to colonize tho? Lower yield?

any variety can be small if you select those phenos. and even a tall mushroom will just grow itself into whatever shape it has to

I was going to suggest ghost but Vibe beat me to it. It's small, I think the biggest one I've ever had was like 4" tall or less, which makes them a pain in the ass to harvest but they grow in nice clusters in my experience. My ghosts are actually pretty fast to colonize grain and a substrate. All my people love ghosts because they're wickedly potent for most mortals - they've been saying they're more potent than PE with better visuals. But, without cloning you won't have the best yields, and even a prolific clone they won't be that heavy yields because of their stature.
APE is also renowned for its potency and they don't get too big either, but without cloning isn't a big producer either

Yeah it's for something like this, lift bed storage. Will have a small fan or 2 bringing in air. A gap underneath. More headroom than under a typical bed.

Ghost seems cool for a longer term goal, but I only see swabs available. I do have a small flowhood tho. Was thinking more along the lines of a more classic strain, but the more exotic varieties are cool too. Gives me something to think about.
I don't quite need them so short. But something that's not likely to hit the lid and stay under 5" would be nice. Not ruling out Maz yet but open to suggestions.

Thanks for the excellent info! Well I can do a few bins, so I can play with a bin or two for Ghost, but that's gonna take time to dial it in it seems. Could always go all in on Ghost down the road if it rly works out.

if the tubs are hidden by the frame like in this photo, i would just use clear ones and if you feel the need for lights attach them to the frame. could look pretty dope. stringing rope lights around the interior of every tub would be tedious and unnecessary. also, the fans arent needed at all. it looks like theres plenty of gaps

It would be like a 4" desk or computer fan, very gentle.
Nah, not stringing rope lights. Just simple flat strips with a sticky back, waterproof with a USB plug. Just peel the back off n stick to lid. They're on eBay from Chinese sellers. Search "USB waterproof strip led" or "USB aquarium led" on eBay. Add some USB extension cords...it'll be good.
But there are similar beds with a led light strip on the headboard so one could definitely pull it off with that and have the light underneath, especially with blue lights. Modern look tho, I'm more into a 'transitional' (modern traditional) design style.
But I don't even want ppl *thinking* about under my bed.
This is like...a few months down the road. I'm using 7" tall shoeboxes in a cabinet but wanna put rectangular food dehydrators in the cab instead, side by side, n put the tubs under the bed. No carpeting, hardwood floor. I have a good hepa filter with UV lights n carbon in the room. I dust n clean weekly. Could easily fit 6 10gal tubs, with a little room to spare.

So I'm not getting this exact bed... This is a pic from the interwebs.
Just search "lift storage bed" and you'll see plenty. Some cheap ones for $400-500, some nice hand crafted wood ones for $1-2.5k+, including some with cabinet headboards.
...I'ma get a cheap one. Walmart has some on their site.
If you know a carpenter, the hydraulic lifts are available for sale and they can build one.

Mostly their strength! I only have to eat 1.5g and It is exactly what I'm looking for everytime. I used to eat an eighth of regular cubes to get anywhere close to the same experience.
Quick colonization times!
Plus they are visually appealing in the bag. They look like little smurf houses when dried and they hold their shape.
They don't drop spores anywhere making it easy to procrastinate without your tub looking like shit from all the spore dump.
They're all around awesome!

Just FYI, if u hide food dehydrators in a cab or large bin or something, u gotta punch a bunch of holes in the back of the cabinet (like 2-4" hole saw), n run some exhaust fans or it'll stay too wet n mold ur sh*t
...ask me how I know? Lol (don't)
Or else just take the back off the cabinet entirely n give it room from the wall to breathe
...some child safety magnet locks on the doors n you're gold

Literally sounds like the holy grail for me, dude. Do they not drop spores or are the spores albino too??? Haha, I wonder...
Yeah I'ma probably run some Maz until I get the agar n g2g rdy for the Ghost, then gotta clone...but was eventually gonna have to clone anyway.
So is 50% stronger pretty safe to say? Double sounds like a bold statement, but that would be epic.
I have had some strong Transkei n Orisa India tho, so it wouldn't totally surprise me. Never had PE but a friend told me they were the best, he used to gro. I've been on n off with this hobby myself.
I like that they're from a GT mutant, I've assumed they were a PE, but the faster colonization times sounds great.
Any figures on dry oz to qt of grain yield? Just curious... naturally

They have dark spores they just don't drop them similar to pe.
They are at least 50% stronger but my money is on double strength over regular cubes like golden teacher or b+. I've never tested the actual strength with a test kit though so it is all from personal experience with me and my friends.
Pe are awesome shrooms! I have grown a ton of pe and they are strong for sure but they get big sometimes. The shroom in my avatar is a 181gram PE tall boy. Not too big but bigger then your under-bed needs most likely.
I don't really weigh them out cuz I only have a 200g weed scale and it is too much of a pain weighing in segments. I don't sell them so it never mattered all that much.

So I'm getting Ghost & KSSS spores. The KSSS squat knots are cool but may be too short, I think classic KSSS should be fine. Might come back around to the squat knots another time. Will do a few shoeboxes of KSSS and hopefully get some nice short fat clusters to clone. For Ghost, I'll be looking for the biggest ones.
Thanks for the suggestions!

any Advice for FAE holes for this small 12 gal bin? [Re: Anon888]

What would you do to give this bin nice FAE? 2x 1-1.5" holes on 2 sides, 4 sides? Several 1/4" holes? 1-1.5" holes on short ends and a few 1/4" holes on long ends? Open to suggestions, thank you.
It's on the shorter side. Don't wanna overdo it. Lid seal is decent, so def needs some holes. Planning on using poly fill for large holes and/or small filter patches for small holes. Don't rly wanna shot gun.

Hmmmm... maybe. It is pretty short but not quite shoebox short. no foam on lids like some of the sterilites...
Have seen some great un-modded tubs on here but some say they crack the lid unless it's a shoebox or something, I don't wanna fuss with lids... tho could prolly just unhinge these snap locks...

still planning the under-bed grow for a few months from now, just brainstorming for now. haven't gotten these tubs yet but they'd fit perfect and are about an inch taller than the Rubbermaids I was looking at, mostly due to the Hefty "hi-rise" lids

hmmm. well, I'll be sticking an LED light onto the lid in this case so can't rly flip lids here. I don't wanna crack or fuss with lids rly, aside from unhinging the snaps
I'm leaning towards a few 1/4" holes with filter patches but I'll start small and add if needed. maybe 1"+ holes would be overkill for this short tho
