I just successfully scalped some Taylor Swift tickets before the general sale

I’m conflicted about it.
My wife and I both really hoped to be able to score tickets during the presale to surprise our daughters for Christmas.
Unexpectedly, we both got through the presale without knowing the other person had too. I bought six of the very cheapest nosebleed seats, section 740something, thinking each of our daughters could invite one friend.
My wife bought 4 slightly more expensive seats in the 600something section, still way up, but not quite so far back.
Then when we spoke to each other we realized we had 10tickets to a show we only needed 4-6 for. So after a long talk about it, we put her set of four up for sale.
I hate the idea of scalping tickets, intentionally inserting oneself into a transaction in order to do nothing but jack the price up, make a profit with no value added. It feels like some other sad parent didn’t get those pre-sale seats because we got lucky. But also times have been tough, and the mere possibility of re-selling those seats at just enough markup to cover what we paid for the ones we’re keeping, was very enticing.
We over-listed them, thinking no one would bite before the general sale even goes down. We were wrong. $100 face value presale seats resold for $400 each, a little over 24 hours later, and the general sale hasn’t even opened yet.
And to be clear, some of these tickets had to be resold. We absolutely could not afford to spend all that money on seats. We could barely afford the nosebleeds I got. But we wanted to do something special for the kids. They’ve never been to a real concert. Having accidentally ended up with 10 seats means some of them had to go. We didn’t need to profit on them, but absolutely needed that money back.
Again, I’m conflicted about it. But relieved too. We didn’t take a loss having to resell them for less a few months from now when demand dips. We didn’t absolutely fleece anyone. They over paid, but not by nearly as much as other people are asking. We got the cost of our tickets covered, and have a little extra.
I feel like I hit the lotto. My kids basically got free Taylor swift tickets for Christmas, and i can even buy them a shirt and poster or whatever at the show, maybe even let them bring a friend.
Hell, and if money gets really tight in the next few months (it always seems to this time of year) I’ve still got two extra. Even parting with them at face value in the future feels like a little insurance in the bank.
You guys got feelings about this? I so dislike the idea of scalping something in such high demand, I feel I could only post about it anonymously.

I bought two pairs of tickets for the 2015 World Junior Hockey tournament. Selling the other tickets helped pay for the set I kept so that my daughter and I could go. We both cherish those memories and I'd do it again if it meant doing something awesome.
You didn't force anyone to buy them and it's not like you're making it into a business.
Have a great time!

That’s basically where I’m at. I didn’t think anyone would pay so much before a sold out general sale and folks have an opportunity to get a real idea of demand.
Someone must have felt they had the funds safely in hand to spend, and really wanted the seats. If they’re happy about their purchase, then I’m happy.
I can justify it that way, still just feels icky

Holy shit. Those tix were sold before I saw the news. Apparently Ticketmaster canceled the general sale completely due to low inventory.
Checked the time stamps and my sale went through right after the announcement was made. Someone swooped in quick.

You're a scum bag. Crimes that rip off the general public like petty theft, burglaries, scalping etc are the lowest. What goes around, comes around. Karma will have your back.

If you read the post, you’ll see that it wasn’t something we planned. And no one ripped anyone else off. We didn’t realize the general sale had been cancelled, the buyer scooped them up because ours were the lowest listing of a highly in demand product. They actually got a deal buying from us something they couldn’t get anywhere else.
I don’t feel icky about it anymore. I get to take my kids to a concert.

Whether you planned it or not. You put a mark up on tickets, that's scalping and scalping is ripping someone off. I've been in the same situation and sold the tix at face value plus any service fee which is the fair price.
But hey, think whatever you have to, to help you sleep at night scumbag.

In truth, I sincerely appreciate you saying that. Your unnecessary hostility helped further cement my inclination that there’s nothing to feel bad about here.
Thanks friend

It's a free market. The buyer wasn't forced to buy them and the seller didn't steal anything from them.
If you had a rare penny that you could sell for $24k, would you be ripping someone off if you sold it for $23k? No, of course not. Would you sell it for a penny? If so, you're a moron.
I think the most likely explanation for your vitriolic response to the OP is that, sometime in the past, a scalper raped your ass.

Don't hate the player, hate the game...
I think the fact that you didn't set out to do this intentionally makes it a little different.
Personally, I don't actually give a shit whether people get to see Taylor Swift, anyway, so I don't think the moral stakes are all that high. $100 is still a shit-ton of money for a concert ticket, it's not like you're snatching them from the hands of starving orphans.

I, personally, would beat the fuck out of starving orphans for Taylor Swift tickets. I'd sell the tickets, though...
