A vermiculite substitute?

I'm just about to start my first mushroom grow and while gathering supplies I noticed that I can't find vermiculite or perlite. I have the solution for perlite, im using clay pellets. But I still can't find a substitute for vermiculite, Is there one? Or should I go low and pick the stuff out of bagged potting soil :smile:. Any help would be great!

yes there is alot of things you can use, rye berries, bird seeds, millet and lots more, checkout the teks in the faq

Thanks, I looked through the guides, they mentioned popcorn, some types of birdseed etc.

Will safflower seed work (that is what happens to be around the house)

if you live in the states you can get perlite at Walmart, and verm at Lowe's. Hope this helps...

I believe that safflower is too high in oil content to make a good substrate, but don't take my word on it.
