Wet mushrooms- temporary glass storage?
    #2804505 - 06/18/04 02:21 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Got a nice haul today and instead of drying them as normal, I was thinking of keeping them fresh for tommorow (gonna share em round at a bush party). I've been keeping them in an airtight glass container for about 5 hours. I got a bit paranoid that they might sweat and they were smelling a bit funky so i took em out. The sides of the glass are moist now. It couldn't have done anything bad to them could have it? I'm just keeping them in a paper bag now. peace

peace

I would say dry them, if you're like me, you have computer parts all over, so grab a fan, hook it up to you power suply, and dry those suckers on some newspaper. You should be able to dry them enough to keep them preserved. You should make a desication chamber. There are instructions on how to do it in the growing section.

/\Yeh good call....... i'm gonna fan dry for a bit and then chuck them in the chamber... as you said better safe than sorry.

There is no way the sweating in the jar could have done enough to make them bad is there? i mean they look totally fine still... just smell a little bit funky... but not like totally off or anything.

peace

Sorry, I have not the experience to answer that last question. Of course if you are feeling generous, you could send a gram or so of those dried puppies to me.

tis all good..... we got about 200.... so yeh it doesn't matter if we loose a bit of ptency for tommorow. My only issue was wether they time in the glass jar would have effected them badly at all.

Yeah im not so sure about using an airtight container for fresh mushies...i recommend putting them in a paper bag and keep them in your fridge. Unless too much rotting has occured, they will last until tomorrow.

I guess what happened would be the same as if they were in a plastic bag for a while....... so no one can confrim that they will be fine?

yeah try to put them in paper bags. if you dont have any bags you could mabey wrap them in news paper and store in the fridge till your ready.

but yeah i would stay away from plastic bags, because the mushrooms is naturally going to loose a little h2o the plastic, or glass will hold it in, but in paper it gets absorbed.

if they dont smell like a dead fish they should be all good.

If they smell "a bit funky" then there are bacteria rotting them. If you eat mushrooms in that condition then you are risking food poisoning. The easy way to judge them is to ask yourself if you'd eat some other food (say, a sandwich or a salad) that smelled like that. If the answer is no, then you probably shouldn't eat these, for exactly the same reason.

If there's doubt in your mind, try to err on the side of caution. Food poisoning can be very serious. You can always get more mushrooms.

Happy mushrooming!

Mushrooms start to decompose the instant you pick them(if they havent allready from being old).  If you are afraid of losing potentcy, then you need to preserve them as soon as you get back from your hunt (the longer you wait without preserving them, the more potentcy is lost) You need to dry them right away if you have been keeping them in a air tight jar. OR, next time you get some more and you want to keep them fresh, do what Ooze said or wrap them in wax/parchment paper and put them in the refridgerator as soon as you get back from your hunt that way they will be nice and tasty for later use.
Just remember you cant leave them in the fridge for too long either, so drying is your best bet if you're planning on saving some.(they can last for a very long time if dried correctly).
Also, dont overlook what ToxicMan has told you either.
have fun
