Usually a mix of WBR and pearled barley but I've recently made a couple bags from millet. Supposedly millet makes more alkaloids and might be easier for me to extract from.
I also have a bag of pseudoA and Natal grains going.

Hi all, not sure if this is something I've come across already.. but here it is anyway. So I made a mistake by using cactus soil which contained nutrients as a casing (just mistaken bag soil for 50:50).. it was entirely colonized.. so I thought I would just add a very small layer of 50:50 on top of the old colonized casing.. few days later, notice these knots:
Didn't want to take drastic measures, scraping casing, soak, recasing, etc.. so I just tried this.. maybe this wasn't handy.. but I'm curious what others think. Would be funny if it just gave me 3 fruits and thats it haha.

The top of my dub-tub apparently got knocked off for less than 12 hours...
Which resulted in a bunch of aborts
Thankfully the fruits that I was planning on cloning ended up surviving

I think I'm going to start covering the tops with grocery bags instead of dub-tubbing Amy future grows

Yeah.. that's my perspective on it too.. it's unfortunate/disappointing, but I'm going to make the best of it.. it looks like the ones that aborted wouldn't have been ones id have chosen to clone anyway, and the whole purpose of this tub was to find some good clone candidates.
Since I already have to harvest the aborts, I'm debating on pulling a couple of the "living" fruits as well.. that way I can get a head start on some clones.

Something interesting to me:

- Same clone in these two containers. Spawned ration 1/2 to 100% coir, pasteurized for 2 hours (thanks Hindsight).
- On the left, at spawn I put a 0.5 cm layer of coir. On the right, a thinner layer just to cover/protect the grain.
- Left container was left as is.
- Once fully colonized (at day 5 or 6), right container was cased with cactus soil, pasteurized for 2 hours.
- The containers were put into fruiting condition at the 10 days mark.
- At the 13 days mark, pins on the cactus cased container. I'm still waiting for pins on the left container.
Have you guys had that before? Or do you usually recase with a layer of coir at 100% colonization? It's the first time I'm trying a coir casing with Semp.
I'm sorting out agar plates, and this is a Semp agar pin close-up

Nice tray Melgo! That is an interesting experiment. I have never had pins form on Semps without a casing layer (real casing - not coir psuedo casing), but maybe I wasn't patient enough and maybe I didn't have the right culture.
For my first successful MS trays, I let them go over a month with no casing and no sign of pins. Then I cased them with 50/50. A week or two later, still nothing. So I let the casing dry out and re-hydrated it. I got pins ~5 days later. I took clones of those two trays (different spore prints and different cultures). I am growing those out now, and this time I cased both of them at 100% colonization and both trays pinned without needing to be dried out. One pinned 14 days after casing. The other took another week or so. It's possible these clone trays would have pinned without casing but I just haven't tried it.

A thin layer of verm strait from the bag followed by a heavy misting applied at full colonisation. 6 days later first pins appeared.(not my grow)

Thought (because I know nothing): what if when we apply a casing that is not pure coir, we select for genetics growing in these conditions? Whereas for example The Fresh Prints who cases with pure coir, selects for such genetics?

That has been my assumption as well - it varies by culture. We end up taking clones from what grows well for us, and that includes multiple components of our grows - substrate, grains, humidity, temp, casing, etc.

Look at those! I'm curious to see if they get bigger. I have a tray that has much thicker stipes than normal too but it's too early to tell for sure and I doubt they will be as thick as those chonkers! Will have to give it another week or so to see how it ends up.
