How to roll jars to distribute your agar wedge 20

Recently I've noticed a few posts with people commenting on how they struggle to get their agar wedges to not stick to the lid or struggle with positioning of the wedge toward the lower half of the jar against the glass.
I've tried to illustrate this best with photos showing how you should roll the jar rather than shaking.
Start with your wedge in your jar

I've now taken the same jar and tilted it toward the wedge with the intention of flipping the jar upside down slowly.

Flipped upside down

I now tilt the jar backwards away from the wedge which encourages the grain and wedge to drift back.

Now you complete the roll to trap the wedge in its final position.

Yes, it's been a struggle... I've got a few plates ready to be put to grain this morning. So I'll give your roll ten a try.

Iโve never put agar to to grains, and will be shortly now that I got some clean plates. About how much agar would necessary to get a good start. I have them round 100mm Petri dishes. Also, does it matter where the agar ends up once itโs in the jar? Do you want it covered up by the grains or just sitting against the glass?

Technically, any amount of colonized agar will work, but the bigger it is will likely colonize a little faster. For me, it all depends on how much I have available vs. how many jars I have.
You definitely want each piece to be covered by grains, and preferably not up against the glass. It will still work, but it can slow things down.
I just used 2 plates to inoculate 14 quart jars. One of the plates had a questionable section, so I avoided it and used even smaller pieces from that plate.
I'm so glad I didn't inoculate my jars last night! I had to sterilize my knife packs and by the time they were cooling down I was too tired. Derrayld posted this at the perfect time!
I just tried it and this technique worked great for me! I did manage to get one piece stuck to the glass but I was able to get it slid down under the grains using the same principle the OP describes, just with a little bit of force.
Thanks for sharing!
Edit: After getting a piece stuck to the glass, (my fault), I started using some grains to prevent the piece from ever getting flattened up against the glass. As long as there is a grain or two in between it, it shouldn't stick to the jar. I found by sifting the agar piece in a back and forth motion before tilting the jar caused it to pick up enough grains to prevent it from getting stuck.
I hope that makes sense. "Sift" around for a few seconds, then begin the first tilt of the jar. This motion is not aggressive shaking nor rolling the jar. The jar is kept upright, and moved horizontally back and forth or in a circular motion. The motion is only enough to slide the piece of agar around the top of the grains, while avoiding the side of the jar. I hope this makes sense!

I personally like the smallest piece possible, just in case, and I like to have it close enough to the outside of the container, or the top of the grain pile, that I can see what's happening and detect any contamination issues early. I also like to geek out on the whole process of the mycelium leaping onto the grain. If it gets stuck to the side of the glass, I usually just leave it. I find that shaking a grain master a couple times, giving the agar a chance to colonize new grain in between each shake, easily makes up for any time lost in using a smaller wedge. I also find that using a smaller grain master to then colonize one or two quart jars to transfer from seems faster than using a larger master.
Then again, I'm almost afraid to speed things up at this point. When you have cultures in every stage of the process, it becomes more about managing your time and workflow than waiting for things to be ready. A successful liquid culture would probably give me an aneurysm lol
Dope write-up, by the way. It's sure to help people.

Well done dude, nice write up.
I use 1/6 of a plate per jar and I like to get it in position just like that, with the myc facing inwards. That way it's really easy to monitor progress.

I pretty much only do LC these days, but I remember it being a struggle sometimes having wedges stick to the glass or lid when I did A2G. Nice writeup.

Just ran into this thread recently and have incorporated it into my process. So simple, so smart. Thanks big D!
