Help me choose the right pressure cooker
    #2801687 - 06/17/04 08:01 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

I'm in the UK so cant get my hands on 'serious' stuff like All American so i'm considering these two

5 L Hawkins  only ?21

or

14 L Hawkins for ?53

Both are from http://www.direct-cutlery.com/ if you know a better site for EU please let me know.

Now which one should i choose?
5L is only a bit smaller but will do the job just as well i think

If you can afford the larger one, get it.  Trust me on this.  I got a cheap 6L and it can only do 2 qts at a time...what a bitch.

I got an AA941. It can do 20 quarts or 30lbs of grain in bags in one run. It cost me $320. =)

Hawkins is a good PC. Very reliable. I have one. I'd go the 14lt because a 5lt Hawkins will not fit quart or 1lt jars inside (it won't be tall/deep enough) and you'll be stuck with small jar use only.

However, a big PC makes it hard to clean and cook regular food in, which I do. That's why I settled on a 10lt Hawkins. Modest in size, does what I want. After all a single 1lt jar of spawn will deck out 15kg weight of moist pasteurised bulk or more.

I'm of the view that if you're only growing for hobby needs, well making a mere two x 1lt jars of spawn in a PC session is more than enough. Two such jars just cased as "is" alone will grow out ok.

For what it's worth a 10lt Hawkins can bang out 4 x 1lt jars of spawn in a hit, a 14lt Hawkins would probably do 6 such jars (lt is slightly larger than quart). Seriously, only the commercial folks want big spawn making PC's. You don't need to go so big for mere hobby level. Good luck in your travels.
