This jar has been fun to watch
That jar is so damn cool. I've seen some awesome mush-themed stuff in the background of many of your pics.... seems that you are a collector of sorts! I always have my eye open for stuff like that but never seem to run into it, other than some prints in frames here and there.
Thanks! Yeah the mushroom nick nack collection keeps growing. My wife picks up a lot of this stuff, I think she found this jar at an antique shop. I've had it hanging around for a couple of years, so it's nice to finally get some use out of it

Another ziploc from grain that was sterilized* in the ninja foodi. This one was a bit bacterial. That makes 1 in 4 with signs of contam so far for grains in the foodi, but haven't had to toss a jar yet. Still gotta be better than noccing up instant rice bags
*the term "sterilized" used loosely

Honey is only antimicrobial as long as itβs below 20% moisture, any more and it can still grow bacteria/fungi like any other sugar source. Now that I have the equipment, I kinda want to isolate my own culture of yeast from raw honey and make mead with it.
Yes to making mead, and please send me some!
Yeast ranching though....I don't ever want to go back to that life lol. It's just SO MUCH WORK and it's a total crapshoot. Especially with sours, ciders or meads that take a year +.. "is it going to be delicious or is it going to taste like literal sweaty horse blankets smashed into turds?"
Just use a known yeast culture to make the mead is my $0.02...Oh, and to send me some

The bottles are looking good psycho. I hate how jobs always get in the way of cultivation. Seems like there's never enough time in the day. I'll be making sub, making casing, agar, spawning, prepping grain and harvesting today.

Pure trich source plate

Swabbed

Rubbed onto clean, fully colonized grain spawn - really rubbed into the grain and the mycelium

Six days later

Note the metabolites from the mycelium defending against the trich. With so much Cube mycelium in there already, it is difficult to see if the trich mycelium has grown out over/into/onto the Cube mycelium and if so, how far, but on clean uncolonized grain, trich takes just 5 days to germinate, colonize an entire spawn jar, and sporulate; after 6 days in this jar, there is no evidence of spore production. The only spores you see in there are remaining from what I swabbed into the jar 6 days ago. This jar will be sent to coir in a shoebox to further see what happens.

Cool. Spawning it will be interesting.
