Hi everyone I posted a while back what I suspected was a field mushroom Just looking for any ideas on this?
See above photos
Had a skirt (the little flap midway up stem -forgot name) Browny staining bottom of stem White cap Large cap Didn't smell anything particular Habitat: amongst grass near gum trees. As you can see stem removed cleanly from cap as per description of field mushies
It's been raining heaps in Melbourne
I didn't take it home to do a spore print. Just want to know if Im on the right track

Interesting. Not sure if we have those in the US…. Might be too far gone to eat IF it’s edible.
As long as you are looking and doing your best to identify you’re on the right track.

Thanks I hope so
For clarification, this is a different mushroom as well to what I found previously and thought was a field

For Agaricus, you don't need to determine the exact species if you intend to eat it. The smell is the most important thing. The poisonous ones all have a phenolic smell, described as an unpleasant inky or chemical smell, or like the inside of a medicine cabinet. If it smells like almond, aniseed or a 'mushroomy' smell like Portobello mushrooms, then it is good. Also, if it instantly stains chrome yellow when bruised at the cap edge or cut through the stem base, then don't eat it. Don't worry though if it stains slowly yellowish but has an almond or aniseed smell, the smell is the most important thing. You can also do the boiling water test - just pour boiling water over the mushroom and if it instantly turns yellow then don't eat it. This will also make the smell more apparent.

Cut or bruise the stem and watch for any yellowing, as there is a close lookalike ( the 'yellow stainer')that doesn't always smell like disinfectant or iodine. Also if your not sure put a fresh specimen into a sealed container for about 15 mins then smell carefully as you open the lid, any unpleasant odour will be very noticeable.
The 'field' mushrooms are taking advantage of the good rains in Qld too, but hard to get them before the bugs 😭
I find 3 types of edible agaricus locally and also the yellow stainer so you made a good call..if in doubt chuck it out... it's only a few bucks to get safe food from your local shops. Not as fun but neither is being violently ill.
Best of luck with your searching!!

Thanks to both of you! I have done the hot water test on a few potentials I have in my yard. I will also try out the container test
I have found some pine mushrooms and sullius (can't spell) so given they are easier to identify, I might just eat then lol
99% sure I have found some boring mushroom that is not subs given the time of year too but am gonna post for ID anyway because it's good fun And I agree, stupid bugs. They ate a few good looking pines I saw today.

😄 Sounds like you have a nice variety to sample, it's great to get out and enjoy the early part of the season, even if everything else is on the hunt too. Lol. Hope to see some glory pic's coming from your way 👍

I am a little sad
The "pine mushrooms" actually false saffron milk caps. Taste bitter as but not had cooked yet.
I am thinking the agaricus is edible. No obvious smell after sitting in a plastic zip bag for an hour or so. No yellow staining.
But honestly, don't wanna poison myself even remotely small chance. I also have a bag of store bought mushrooms in the fridge so am thinking why bother with the wilds hahaha
Also update: the other mushrooms I posted for an ID elsewhere are likely cortinarius. I threw them in the rubbish lol. I figured it's too good to be true to find psychedelics this time of year in abundance.
Mushrooms are a bloody challenge!

I've thrown out so many false hopes this year, but I don't want to get discouraged so I'm hoping that something with a beautiful blue tinge will pop up again....soon 🤞 Your in good country so it's only a matter of time and perseverance!!😁
