Liberty Cap Identification Help
    #28031059 - 11/03/22 11:53 AM (1 year, 2 months ago)

Hey People,

So me and the other half started looking for some liberty caps and came across some mushrooms which pretty much seem to be them however we are not 100% sure so could do with some help please!

We found them in a field with horses, they feel slimy, they are dark under neath and have a film.

I agree with Protostropharia semiglobata (Dung Roundhead).

OP - a good identifying feature of this species is that it has a very slimy and hard to grip stem (as well as cap). Liberty caps may have a sticky cap when wet, but it won't be nearly as slimy as Dung Roundheads, nor will the stem.

I am watching with great interest. I live near a cherry orchard in central Oregon that is constantly being trimmed, the smaller branches get left to rot on the ground. As you would expect there are about 5 small brown mushroom species that just absolutely exploded last week. I hesitated to harvest, but I have collected a dose EXACTLY like what you have. I wish I could help. I am a total new guy, but I don't think they could be confused with something toxic? Experts, please chime in here.

OP pictures look different than the pix on the web of dung roundhead, gills are lighter in color and wider spaced on Protostropharia semiglobata (Dung Roundhead), according to my lame-o attempt at ID.

These are little guys, gills are very fine and closely spaced, spore print is dark purple. Photo taken indoors, get in outdoor setting for best color ID.
