Purple poppy!

I've been told its the poppy with purple flowers that makes the good stuff, is this true?
If not what do the real ones look like?
Would boiling in water and then evaporating make a smokeable product?
Thanks for any help.

yes, there are poppies with purple flowers. they come in many colors. but the color doesn't really determine how the potency is. it mostly has to do with growing conditions and strain. as far as boiling for a smokable product.....are you speaking about dry pods or fresh off the plant? if fresh, just harvest the opium from the pod. if dry, then just make tea. you can do an extraction procedure to yield some sort of smokable finish, but i have no idea about that and how it would be done. research a little bit.

opium poppies grow in many different colors. use the search engine and you should find a few threads that tell you how to differentiate between the species
as for boiling pods down to a goo and smoking the goo...not reccomended, it would taste very unpleasant and would be full of plant sugars and other plant material. so it wouldn't be very potent

OK cheers,
I've researched and I believe I have found a P.Somn strain!
I tried slicing the pods and a very small amount of white latex came out, I squeezed the pods and seeds came out. Do these just have very little latex or am I still got the wrong poppy?

Very little latex, it takes a lot of pods to get a decent amount of latex.

yes, there's very little latex from each pod. i usually figure around a 1/3-1/5 of a bowl per pod (per score). and never squeeze the pod. you have to make very shallow incisions on the pod, it can be hard to get the hang of at first. vertically or horizontally, either or, your call. a pin or syringue tip works well. after you score (slice) just let the latex seep for a few hours and harvest when it's a brownish black color. the time to harvest your tar is when the pod has a light bluish dust too it and when the crown is turned upward or flush flat. the fact that seeds were coming through the incision is not good. you may have butchered that pod. remember, extremely light slices are made and the latex should be allowed to seep for at least 3 hours (i usually let it go from morning to sunset). hope some of this info helps you on your harvesting.

Thanks psilostylin, thats what I need to know.
Is their any other ways, like extractions, that can harvest more all in one?

not that i know of. i'm sure there are some, but i don't know about em. the only thing i now of is making tea with pod and straw (leaves and stems)...but the end result isn't a smokable product. it's a drinkable tea...or if you wish, you can evaporate it into a gummy residue (pod putty) which you eat. personally, i don't like pod putty. tea is just fine for me . peace

Smooth pods, without hair on the crown OR stem, a glossy white-ish look all over. Hariless(.....except for H&C's)
Pics help.
Once you know you KNOW, and you will never have to ask.
(personally I can spot a poppy at 300 yards )

Are there any dangers to a misindentification? Like any poisonous poppies that form a rounded pod?

opium is a poison, too much can kill, shuts down the body and you turn all blue.

"opium is a poison, too much can kill, shuts down the body and you turn all blue."
Not true it is a medicine, and the debate over which plants are medicine and which are drugs and which are genuine poisons goes on forever.
But as for what BlackZombie said, NO there are not an poppies that are going to seriously hurt you, in fact some will make you feel quite good, but thats no reason to not know what you are taking.
"some" Plant books list morphine as a toxin, which it is not, arsenic is a toxin

According to an exelent book I was reading entitled "Poppies" (guess what it was about) a red one could turn purple or maybe even a white one due to the acidity/basicness of the soil. Just thought it was worth mentioning. You probably shouldn't i.d. them solely on color. Just a thought.

This is true of quite a few flowering plants.
Regarding Poisons and Medicines. I'd say medicines are poisons and poisons are medicines. It just depends on their intended use or their purpose in a particular context.

I got some pods and took them home. I cut the heads as described but nothing came out, should I boil them instead?
