How smelly is it?

I plan to do my first grow tucked away in the corner of my basement where nobody really goes but it just occurred to me that maybe people will smell it and go looking to see what's going on. How much does it change the general smell in the air of the room that it's in? (At each stage, planning to do PF tek) I'm just afraid one of my adult kids who live here sometimes will walk into the basement and think a cat crapped in the corner and go looking for it.

Not at all. I have them growin in my livingroom Well, if it's healthy, the most that someone could smell would be the smell of fresh mushrooms and maybe earth. When contaminated, the smell can change. Besides that, you don't get like that grower smell you got with weed.
Would your grown up kids have a problem with you growing shrooms? Sooner or later they will find out if you try to grow them secretly from them at home. Well at least I think that^^

If they're clean, PF pucks smell kinda... flour-y? Not bad, not strong, but distinct.
Once they're fully colonized, there is a distinct "mushroom-y" smell to them. Kinda bitter and earthy, it's a smell common to most fungi if you have enough of it in one spot. Again, not terribly strong, nor bad.
Contamination, however, THAT can get all manner of funky. I've had contams that made my whole apartment smell like solvent, another that smelled extremely sour. It's a wide world of foul that can come from unwanted microbes. Additionally, wet perlite can get a bit "locker room"-y at times if stuff starts to grow in it. I always used distilled water for hydrating it to avoid that particular trouble.

Your adult kids will find the grow regardless of smell, it's what they do.

Thanks. I just think they'll be likely to "tell one friend". Also I just want to experiment with microdosing for mental health reasons not supply my kids with an illegal substance. One might be moving to a place where shrooms are decriminalized, maybe they can try them on their own.

Every so often when I walk past my APEs I get a whiff of something unpleasant. So the smell can be dependent upon species, too.

The only time I smell anything is when I am making up my tubs or harvesting and that is when I have my head basically in the tub and at most it smells like a mushroom it's not like growing weed where your whole house smells.

Running the PC can fill the house with a particular smell. Not necessarily unpleasant. Oats in the PC actually smell good, corn smells like fucking hot garbage, WBS is noticeable is just kinda earthy bready strange.
Pasteurization of coco coir smells like potting soil, not unpleasantly.
Beyond those two specific steps, there shouldn’t be any strong smells at any other stage in the process.
- Edit: the first hour or so of drying in a dehydrator can put out a smell of fresh wet mushrooms, but it dissipates pretty quickly.
