Grain jar lid for agar to grain
    #28026739 - 10/31/22 07:02 PM (2 years, 2 months ago)

Happy halloween! Question for the mycologists out there. If one were planning or agar to grain transfer, the lids on the grain jars would only need a 1/4 hole with a sfd on it right? No need for a injection port, but it sounds like a gas exchange hole with filter might be nice. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

You don't need an injection port if you're going to inoculate with agar wedge(s). Gas exchange is recommended, but you can always go with unmodified lid teks too.

you really donโ€™t need an injection port ever, everything can be safely done with open lids if you have good sterile technique

sfd, polyfill, tyvek all work well. or one piece unmodified lids unscrewed slightly work great too

As above, it varies on your experience and if you plan on ONLY doing a2g,g2g..etc...I personally like the versatility of a 1/4in hole for GE,covered with SFD circle,Rtv'ed down. I also like a second 1/4in hole with clear RTV as an injection port. I prefer using grain LC when starting projects..so this is MY preference.

It only seems that way, but in fact, it is an incredibly easy hobby once you figure out how to navigate the forum, learn some of the terminology and get your first project done. Cubes are actually incredibly easy to grow. Don't overthink it

The RTV is optional if you lightly sand around the hole.

If you don't sand the RTV (or any other 100% pure silicone) is required to hold on the SFD.

If you do the unmodified slightly loose lid you need to make sure you don't mess with your jars too much.  Something difficult for news to do.  Messing with it too much will allow turbulent air flow to push contamination around the loose fitting lid.

You can replace a SFD with some tightly packed poly fill, etc.  The challenge with starting is picking from the many ways and giving it a try.

Pick the method that works best for you.  And don't be like me and mess with it too much.  Less attention is more for the mushrooms.

Thanks for responding, ans i think im going to go with  just a ge hole with a sfd, becauae it seems.like unmodified requires some skill to know when to looosen or tighten.
