Wild Bird Seed prep

I got this 33lb bag for $20

Looked like pretty clean seed to me
I've only done 3 or so grows in the last 3 years or so, so I'm a bit rusty
What I use to do was bring a big pot of water to boil in my pressure cooker, remove from heat and remove lid, let sit for a second and then pour in my bird seed before replacing the lid
Let sit for 2 hours I think, then rinse outthe seed really well before straining and shaking out excess water
I use to let sit overnight before loading jars but because of time constraints I want to get it all done in one day
So I plan to leave it out to dry and shake out water then load tonight and PC my jars so I can put some agar to them
Anyone else prepping wild bird seed still and using this method?
What type of seed are you guys using?

I would not soak for 2 hrs. 1 hr is plenty for milo, the millet would like less than that.
reverse fooman's prep is what you are doing. It's all good.

Well they ended up sitting for like 2 1/2 hours because I fell asleep and then this fucking strainer let's all the milo fall through I thought would be fine because I don't have the old strainers I use to use
Fucking mess and disaster everywhere right now, super frustrating
Going to need to go to the store and buy new strainers for this to even fucking work
Stressing me the fuck out floor covered in fucking bird seed everywhere all over fucking everything

I second this, and is my favorite to use so far.

I have just been using regular cheap stuff from Crappy Tire (Armstrong Red Ribbon). I only have a handful of grows under my belt but soaked grain for 15-24 hrs, following that, brought just to boiling then drain and let dry for ~45 mins. Jar. PC. inoculate.

I have been using a couple of these strainers (amazon), they seem to do a good job and hold quite a bit.

I'm going to stick with foomans method just because that's what I did for years and use to have good results growing lbs
Just fucking bird seed is annoying as shit to work with, makes me want to see if other grains are less messy
Jars came out a little wetter than I like. Usually would shake the jar after loading to distribute moisture and look for no grains to stick, but there's some sticking going on and can see a bit of excess moisture
Gonna start PCing and go grab something better to use for straining. Ended up hand drying with paper towels...
Hopefully the PC will dry the grains out a bit and they'll be closer to what I want before I inoculate

Not to mean any offense, but I 🤣 when I read this cause I know exactly what you were going through. My first attempt at WBS went horrible, mess all over the sink and kitchen trying to properly hydrate the grain and trying to get rid of all the corn and sunflower seeds which were so many. My grain ended up being a sticky mess when it was all said and done and I ended up tossing it to the birds in my backyard instead of even trying to use it to colonize with. I still have that same economy bag of WBS that I haven’t touched in months 😄. Maybe someday I’ll try again, but for now I just use Hard Winter Wheat Berries which was so much better and simpler.
Hopefully you get that WBS worked out, it’s a great cheap accessible grain, but many have a hard time getting it right

Yeah i use to deal with it every time cleaning my floor of all the wbs etc, but for fuck sake. I don't have the time or patience for that shit any more
Then I loaded my jars and had them steaming for 15 min ready to place my top and start my pressure cook only to realize I never put tin foil on the tops
When I opened the top my wbs looks fucking scorched. I don't think these jars will end up too wet
Plan to PC for 90 min
Fucking disaster today, it's been so long since I've done this shit
Now I'm putting all this bad joojoo energy into my grow already... Smh

I use the same blend as that and I rinse in a 5 gal with hot tap water until water is clear then soak in hot tap water for 24 hours.
Strain for 10 min, load jars, PC 90 min @ 15psi
Shaking once as they come out of PC to evenly distribute moisture
Perfect every time. I also discard any floaters, so no sunflower seeds.

Jesus you're still on here?
When I first started learning about growing you were one of the OG posters that kept popping up

I've never tried soaking before
Guess it's worth trying

Supposedly it helps the endospores start germinating so the PC cycle is more effective.
And yea, I'm still here....took like 7 or 8 years off, but I'm back

I guess that makes sense
So that's suppose to help reduce risk of contam then?
If so I'll definitely be giving the soak a try. I just don't like the waiting

I tried rye berries and I’m back to WBS.. I rinse very well sunflower and corn should float to the top pour off. I measured 500 ml. Grain for each quart I want typically 10.. boil water dump rinsed grains soak 1 hour. rinse again till water is clear. I bought several colanders from the dollar store and dollar store tubs big enough hold them while they dry. Usually 1-1.5 hours of drying. Do the tissue test for moisture not wet. After soak I end up with 600 ml of grains per quart. I line my kitchen sink with window screen to protect my drain Lol. Love some WBS

I do seed in the pot, add water to about 3 inches above the seed, scoop all sunflowers out, bring to a boil, stir, turn off heat, leave it for 30 mins then i do a colander drain overnight usually. This is how ive been doing 5lb bags for a couple months now. Krogers clearance wbs was .45/ lb a few months ago, wish i got more than 35lbs.
