Should I bottom water this shoebox? * 1
    #28022838 - 10/29/22 01:25 PM (2 years, 2 months ago)

I have read about the process of bottom watering tubs to increase the water supply for a good pinset. I’m curious if this tub looks like it needs that. I also believe my substrate is quite shallow (4-5cm) so the amount of water it has could be limited. I just noticed today that one end of the shoebox has pulled a couple mm away from the side as well.

Curious what y’all think.

Thanks very much

Bottom water it sure if you like, pour a cup of water down the side, won't hurt anything.

Ok I put in a half cup to be safe, hopefully the sub expands.

Thanks for the input

The sub won't expand again. Shrinking as it consolidates and putting out fruits is absolutely normal.

Oh I see. That’s news to me so thank you. Wouldn’t the natural shrinking therefore create side pinning on the next flushes? I guess I might need perfect surface conditions to prevent this?

Ime bottom watering, at that stage would create side pins. That said, I'd pay more attention to comments from Baba Yaga

Its already developing the fruits, bottom watering will help at this point.

At this stage I would just leave it be. Doesn't look real dry and the fruiting appears fairly healthy, I would just leave it and mist on occasion if it gets a little dry.

I don't think it's as bad as we think. If it's only now pulling away on one side I'd just ride it out for now.

If it was pulled away on all sides then I might try bottom watering, but it's not going to be long til harvest. I'd let it finish and then heavy mist or bottom water for flush 2.

Before you start...Do you have a Pressure Cooker and a Dehydrator? I highly recommend getting both!

Upon further inspection I noticed that about half of the sub was separated from the walls of the tub, on the half with the larger fruits.

The half cup of water got absorbed well, so I’ll take your advice and leave it from here on out.

I’ll also take this opportunity to ask about another tek I can’t find now, which was rehydration with water that is a certain proportion of the wet weight of the fruit harvested. I am worried about breaking the substrate if i was to dunk but can’t seem to find the technique so if anyone has it that would be handy.

Thanks all for the help.</font></font>

you don’t really need to dunk after harvest, just give it a heavy misting for the first few days & bottom water to see if it soaks anything up after a few hours

There are a few options to rehydrate.  Bodhisattva IIRC showed floating your sub, making for easy harvest and hydrating thereafter.
Personally,  floating made harvesting tedious for this noob.

Heavy misting seems to be common practice, and in my limited experience works well.

floating is not my jam either, it’s easier for me to just lift the sub out of the tub if i’m going that route. you can’t really do it in modded monos either anyways

Haha, good point. I forgot about the modded issue. I guess unmodded was a recommendation I'd took as is now.

i ran like one or two unmodded tubs until i realized they are a pain in the ass in my climate. shit dries out way too fast just cracking the lid lol

for me, the gap left by flipping the lid let a ton of FAE happen & i wasn’t around to mist it enough to keep up surface conditions. it was awhile ago, granted, & i may have better success with it now that i’m more experienced, but i moved to pasty style modded monotubs & they have been set & forget until around pins/first flush & i’ve never gone back. it’s more about what works in your climate & with your specific style of cultivation

A substrate that size misting it super heavy for a bit would do the trick. :bongload:
