Moisture getting through vac seal bags?
    #28022082 - 10/28/22 08:59 PM (2 years, 2 months ago)

So I have a few oz of dried mushrooms in storage. I checked to make sure that the vacuum seal was still holding, as I do monthly, and saw that the indicator beads in my silica packs are green. The green means moisture got in there somehow. The vacuum still seems to be holding since the bags are still very tight and the mushrooms are still compressed. They been fine for a couple months and the indicator beads weren't showing any signs of moisture. Now all of them are green. They were cracker dry going in storage. Anyone ever have an issue like this? Any solutions? Are mylar bags better than vacuum bags?

Mine do this sometimes, I figure it is just the beads doing their job properly. There is some moisture in the small amount of air that gets initially sealed up with them, also the vac bag material itself is not 100% airtight, so over time the vacuum is seeping moist air back into the bag. Mine still come out pure bone cracker dry, even though the colour indication has been somewhat triggered  so I say the beads are just doing pretty much precisely as intended

Thanks. I feel a lil better hearing they still come out dry. I think I might be bag all of them with new packs to keep them as dry as possible.

of course as a feature of time, they may not last forever in that setup. But vac sealed so far I have some two years or so that have indicated beads but still come out flawless. Definitely rebagging with fresh beads every couple of years would almost extend shelf life indefinitely I would guess

I've had cracker dry fruits go into vac bags and 6 months down the line, they're bendy when I get them out.

My solution was to dry them for 24 hours instead of 12 in the dehydrator and so far so good.

There is a post on here about that issue somewhere. I'll have a looky when I get 5 mins.

I do 24 hours at full temp on my cosori. Before I stop them I test to see how much they break up. If it turns to powder it's good, if it just crushes or snaps I let them go longer.
