Yard/wood chip mushroom, maybe cortinarius?
    #28020991 - 10/28/22 09:34 AM (1 year, 2 months ago)

Any thoughts?  This mushroom grows in clusters in a few places around my yard, It fruits mostly where I’ve got some wood chips, but might grow in other spots, pretty sure it fruited around an oak tree last fall.  It’s brown, and it’s got a really plseasant sweet forestry scent and I really like the texture, kind of crispy but not as snappy as a russula, slightly stringier.  I’ll update as they mature if needed.  Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like a young Armillaria sp. Do you have any more mature specimens?

Oh cool, maybe not so cool for our oak tree.  Most patches in my yard  aren’t associated with any trees, can Armillaria  just live off the chips and whatever matter in the soils?  And this was the first ones to pop up, I’ll update as they mature.
Thanks guys!

They're probably growing from underground roots or something.

I looked up the mella group in MD, and that fits this spot on.  The rootlike rhizomes are all through my chip dump.  I’ve been wondering what they were cause they’re like plant root size, but they seemed so much like fungi.  I guess I’ve probably spread it around, but it was here before we moved in.  I was hoping I’d be able to eat it cause the texture and smell are so nice.

Many people eat honey mushrooms but other people seem to be allergic/sensitive. You could do some experiments.
