Grain bags & PC questions
    #28018780 - 10/27/22 07:17 AM (2 years, 2 months ago)

I've been considering giving bags a try, but I've got a few questions before I order any...

I was discussing this with a cultivator that I trust their opinions. They primarily grow gourmets, but they also have experience with actives.. they mentioned that they kept running into issues when they first started running bags in a Presto 23 qt, but those problems disappeared when they upgraded to an AA.

I'm wanting to give the bags a try, but I'd like to hear from a few people who have experience with bags in a Presto 23qt, so far everyone I've talked to has an AA...

what size bags have you ran/did you run into any problems, if so, were you able to find a solution?

(More questions to follow depending on the answers)

What kind of issues were the folks you talked to running into? I run 3T bags in 16 & 23qt prestos with no problems. 3.5 hour cycle, ~4lbs max per bag

Prestos work fine. Any size bag fits depends how many you want to use. They can hold 6 10T bags or 24-30lbs of grain

They mentioned both starting to run dry with such a long cycle, and for some reason they kept having bags warp... they may have mentioned something else, but I don't remember 🤔

2 hrs is plenty of time to cook. And running dry is a user error nothing to do with bags  you don't want bags to be sitting in water though, I use 1 inch spacers and then set them on the disc it comes with elevated above the water

IME bags only melt when they are in direct contact with a metal wall. To prevent contact you can line the tray + interior with a pillowcase and loosely fold it over the tops of the highest bags after loading.

A penny or similar on the jiggle weight will keep it at 15-16psi with minimal steam escaping. It should be still or very slightly rocking with the coin on, but start shaking normally if you take the coin off. You may have to turn down the burners slightly as the cycle progresses.

Definitely check out the Always Be Baggin tek by natedawgnow.

I just followed it a few days ago using a 16qt Presto, and it worked like a charm! I only did 2 bags (large 0.2 micron with approx. 4qt each) but it was so easy! I could have fit 4 bags if I wanted.

I did slow the cooldown to prevent blowouts.

I always have my bags up against the sides of the PC and have never had one melt, it will melt from running out of water.
