Possible Panaeolus subbalteatus found, UPDATED WITH NEW PIC.
    #2799517 - 06/16/04 02:41 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Found these yesterday and went back today to take the pics, they died :frown: , but ill be sure to get them next time theres a nice storm. These were found in Maryland, they seemed to match up perfectly to the Panaeolus subbalteatus mushroom, but i still need to take a spore print. They bruised blue when i touched them yesterday. What do you think they are????

Impossible to tell from the pics you posted, but judging from the way the stem collapses when dried out, I'd be inclined to the coprinus genus (no active species, some edibles but definitely not your find). Do you see any signs of deliquiscing (sp.?) of the caps? Could you take a pic of one specimen so we can see some more detail?

heres a pic of one upclose, all of the caps of the ones that were developed looked like they exploded.

The mushrooms looked nothing like they did today, the looked exactly like the Panaeolus subbalteatus mushrooms. Orange type color and bruised when touched.

These are definately not subbs holmes :frown: Look up some pics of a few subbs, I know the they vary in appearance somewhat, but these are clearly not even close. I have seen a lot of these around and have always guessed they are some member of the coprinus family. Black juice/oil type substance on the caps will give you a clue, as well as fast deteroration rate. When a coprinus is done for, they turn into nothing but a pool of black sludge  Interesting mushrooms indeed, but nothing worthy of any concern.
