Presto Pressure Cooker PSA

For anyone that has the presto pressure cooker, replace the cheap 1/8” gauge with a better 1/4” glycerin filled gauge. The presto gauge measures 2-3psi off right out of the box and if it’s accurate out of the box, it probably won’t be for long.

How did you test your presto to come to the conclusion the gauge was off by 2-3 psi?

Did the weight not jiggle at 15PSI?

As soon as mine hits 15 psi the rocker starts doing its thing like clockwork. That being said, gauges are notoriously off but generally they will be relative meaning at 15 psi they may read 12 or 17 or... As long as you know how much it is off then you have frame of reference that things are correct.

I replaced with a fluid filled gauge just because I prefer them. When then the new gauge read different, I attached the old gauge to my air compressor and tested against my calibrated regulator for the air dryer. The calibrated gauge and new gauge both disagreed with the presto gauge.

The pressure regulator starts jiggling at around 11 psi.

Not sure if this was @me but if so, I've been working with stuff with pressure gauges for years and it's just what I have noticed.

Until the pin or the pin seat on the vent valve starts getting wazzled out a little bit I would trust the weight. Gauges have more moving parts to go bad and unless you are having them calibrated all the time they will always go bad/read different over time.

Yes, absolutely. That’s why I was saying if the shitty presto gauge reads good out of the box it probably won’t for long. The glycerin filled gauges have always lasted longer for me.

Do you have a link to a suitable replacement gauge? I would like to do research.

No, because the max temp of glycerin is too low for use in pressure cooker, even if it is accurate for now! I should have looked at the specs more closely. I’ve just always used them for everything else and didn’t think of the temp. If this one dies, I think I’ll get the AA PC replacement that has the dual gauge with temp.🤷

The manual for AA pressure cookers straight up tells you the gauges are not accurate and you should just rely on the rocker

Yeah, that’s my whole problem with the presto gauge as well. The presto jiggle weight wasn’t accurate, and I trim it to precise pressure with steel washers. But I can’t tell what pressure it’s trimmed to without an accurate gauge. Before I retired, I worked in healthcare and the steam gauges for the autoclaves were calibrated guaranteed for 5 years, but in reality they stayed accurate for well over 5 years. This glycerin gauge is working well, but now I’m just afraid it’ll explode one day.😝

The weights are accurate, the gauges aren't. Trust your rocker weight

Don’t bet on it. I had to buy a new jiggle weight. I got the kind that’s adjustable for 5,10 or 15lbs. It starts rocking perfect right at 15psi now, but if I didn’t have the good gauge, I wouldn’t have ever known the weight was bad. Just for curiosity sake, will anyone else with a presto weigh their weight for me. I’m curious if the actual weight is wrong or if it was something else causing it to not function properly. Maybe the cone could be misshapen.

I found out where we are all screwing up. We just need to get the pressure cooker testing gauge kit. I'm sure its both cheap and commonly available:
although at the end it does say the weighted gauge canners dont need to be tested.
