Substrate temp is good - but air temp is low
    #28015689 - 10/25/22 10:17 AM (2 years, 2 months ago)

Ladies and gentleman, this is my first time growing mushrooms and it seems everything is going well so far! inoculated brown Ben's with B+, and kept on a heating pad. After I had good micellium growth I crumbled up the cakes and put them in pasteurized CVG and covered with 1/4 inch of my substrate in a modified monotub (correct me if my terminology is wrong). I had a contamination scare with my cakes, but determined it was likely bruising. So far my tub looks good after 4 days with no other growth than micellium (I think).

My question is about temperatures - I looked around and couldn't find my specific issue, but point me in the right direction of there is a thread. Right now I have a heating mat attached to a temp probe, set at 74°, under a my tub (with a towel in between for some heat density). The substrate temp is no problem.

My problem is with my house temperature and the air temp inside my tub. A hygromemter/thermometer at the top of my tub is showing anything from 60°-65° depending on time of day.

Will this effect my mycelium growth/primordia/fruiting - or will the appropriate/stable substrate temp keep everything happy?

Thanks y'all

Welcome.

At this point you have set everything in motion and all you can do is maintain conditions and see what happens.

There are things you have done, uncle bens, heating pad, that haven't proven consistently successful by members here.

So keep learning and researching.

:goodluck: and keep growing

heat mats are unnecessary for colonizing spawn jars & i would ditch it for the tub too. unless your temps are consistently below 60f at night you don’t really need to heat. if you do need to heat, heat the room not the tub directly. heating pads can cause the sub to dry out weirdly & will promote faster growth from contams if they are in there. you can get lucky with uncle ben’s but it’s a crapshoot & you should really move away from it in favor of PF tek for future grows

Yeah, my house is 90% concrete flooring and the slab/house stays COLD during the winter. We run the heater at night, but only at 65 to take the chill off. During the days it warms up, but the floor is still freezing. In the middle of the day right now room temp is ~65°. It's only gonna get colder as we move into Nov/Dec.

Running the heater is shit cause our house is solid brick and not insulated at all (also our windows leak cold air in like crazy). We are renting while my wife finishes grad school and the price is right...Sooo, it is what it is 🙄

Gonna do a proper PF Tek in the future.

gotcha dog. if your temps are staying around 65f you're honestly gonna be fine, but if it is getting colder than 60f adding a space heater or if you can't, running the heat mat & closely monitoring it to make sure it's not drying out might be your best bet. i totally understand the situation is less than ideal, i've lived in some poorly insulated spaces. shit is a bitch in the winter lol.

Hey y'all,

Again, thanks for your input. Just wanted to post an update -

My grow seems to be going well, lots of fungus among us! (it's a joke in my house cause my cat has a fungal parasite)

There were a couple green spots which I was initially concerned about (within a day of my original post I noticed them) - but let ride. I figured if it was trich I was fucked either way. They haven't grown any larger or changed at all - so perhaps dead mycellium? Not to worried about it, but do yall have any input on this?

Again, thanks for the original responses and any incites into these light pale green spots.

post pics, it’s hard to speculate without seeing it. if it’s dusty, it’s trich. but also could just be blue bruising.

that’s contam, sorry friend ): you can tell by that dusty look & strange color. you could try putting a large pile of salt over the sporulating contam but if you get contams before pins you’re not looking too good /:

I can try the salt for sure.

I will say - it's only in a couple spots and hasn't grown at all. I have been watching it nervously.

Like I mentioned, I noticed it pretty early on and have been keeping my eye on it. Im guessing its just a food fungus (from my Uncle Ben's bags) and it doesn't like the conditions of the substrate?

no idea what contaminant it is but if you’re seeing color, that’s just the tip of the iceberg & the rest of the contam has already worked it’s way through the sub. you might be able to squeeze out a flush, but ime if you get contams showing before you have pins your flush will be severely affected if you get fruits at all. good luck friend, hoping you can at least get some fruits.

im sure you’re aware by now but uncle ben’s is a pretty inconsistent way to grow mushrooms & is very prone to contamination. PF tek or learning agar if you have a PC is the way to go in the future

Hear ya on the Brown Ben Tek. I have a couple more bags inoculated and in my fridge right now which I may or may not use.

I also followed Doc34's Wild Bird Seed tek and have mycellium poppin off after 3 days (since I have 40lbs of WBS laying around). Plan on using these on my next tub.
