Pressure cooking wide mouth 1/2 pint jars for agar?

Im just wondering how people put the lid on. I remember one of the oat teks where the lid was placed on upside down to allow some gas exchange. Should the lid be loose or tight. They'll be empty but i guess once they cool i need to open them pretty easily if im opening them to pour agar. Thanks for any responses.

This where the condiment cups will save you a bunch of time, not having to PC jars. You will be amazed how fast you will need more plates. I went thru 100 C cups in like 3 sessions and now I need more pretty quick.

Where do you find the condiment cups? It does sound easier buying pre sterilized disposable stuff

I found tons on Amazon but grocery stores may well have them too.
Edit: The cups and caps come in plastic sleeves so I iso'd the sleeves and put them in the SAB and took them out as I needed them. Then chip clipped them closed when I was done.

I use the plastic food storage lids for my agar jars. I leave them slightly loose during the PCer run, then tighten them when I remove them. They technically work, but I must say I hate using the 1/2 pint wide mouth jars for agar. They are too deep to allow me to place transfers where I want them. They are reusable and cheap, but a pain in the ass to use.
Plus they don't offer very good visibility, so while you can see the culture somewhat when it's in your hand, you can forget about taking pictures of it.

I have some of those containers that Pasty uses, and was considering if I wanted to try them. I was practicing removing the lid slowly, pretending I was working in my SAB. I had a difficult time removing it without making sudden movements, as part of it wanted to stay in place. When it finally lets go, I'm imagining that quick movement may disturb some settled particulates and may lead to contams.
I would love it if you had any tips on removing the lids without a higher risk of contams.
Thanks in advance!

if you’re willing to buy new containers, i used to use the screw top ziplock containers for pasty plates & found those very easy to work with. also no need to mod them, just leave the lids slightly loose in the PC so they don’t get crushed. they take up slightly more room but are so easy to handle

hmmm...idk if i have tips per say, but i have partial paralysis in both hands and was able to pull it off (literally). i think its a matter of using a lot of force to start it and then once you feel it starting to give backing off a little to finish removing it. i kinda keep the lid still and pull on the cup, and keep all the cups facedown except to make cuts

ive used these too, and this is absolutely correct. the twist lids are very user friendly. after all, i prefer the glad rounds because you can pop the whole plate out with a lil squeeze

squeezing the puck out for a tiger drop is bad ass. that’s definitely something you miss out on with the screw tops, unfortunately

There's no sense pouring agar in these jars. It's a million times easier and eliminates any contam vector while pouring.
Just put a tablespoon and a half of prepared warm agar in them. Put the lids on how I described. PC @15psi for 20mins, let completely cool down, remove them carefully to keep condensation on the lid, they'll evaporate it out in a few days.

When I asked you if you had any tips, I should have said, Assume I'm completely retarded and need to be shown how to tie my shoes.
I hadn't even considered holding them upside down until I'm ready to make a cut. That sounds a lot safer, I'm going to go try that out!
HazyHorse, thanks for the tip on the screw tops. That does sound nice and easy to use, but I have always wanted to try a tiger drop.
Thank you everyone! I didn't mean to threadjack, but this has been great information that hopefully even the OP can benefit from.

This is exactly what I do. I bought a media bottle to PC my agar, and I pour it using my most cautious sterile technique in an SAB. 2oz. cups are easily found at stores where I live, and they are cheap. It really helps me keep things simple!

+1 on the jell-o shot cups a.k.a condiment cups. Cheap, easy, and disposable.
