Found a new patch today or should I say several. There were multiple fruiting like in the picture. My pockets were so full they were falling out šŸ¤£. If I were a few days earlier, it would have been even better but this is what I ended up with. There are also ALOT of pins that I will be checking in on.

Went and cleaned up a few spots that were full of babies last week. I was late to a few as I was out of town and I missed the boat on several flushes. Seems to me the season is all but over. Donā€™t think Iā€™d head out to forage any more. That said, itā€™s been probably my best season to date. Got near a pound dry. My friends are gonna be tripping into the summerā€¦.

Iā€™d tend to agree with you. Seems like things are mostly flushed out and done for the season. I would say last year was far and away my best season. I got just over 3.5 pounds dry from last year. I honestly harvested more than I even shouldā€™ve last year because itā€™s enough to last me a decade. I just got a new scale so I havenā€™t weighed this years haul, but Iā€™d guess itā€™s somewhere around 1.5 pounds. Too bad we didnā€™t get all this rain like 1-2 months earlier than we did. The season wouldā€™ve been a banger for sure then. Hereā€™s to 2023! Iā€™m getting all my cultivation stuff ready to start some new projects. Gonna start some more azurescens, subaeruginosa, cyan, and allenii plates and increase my own cultivated beds and spread the love (for microscopy purposes ONLY šŸ˜‰) around the valley.

I wasn't in california for the whole season but I imagined the rain made a difffrence, I spent some time in WA state this year looking for actives. I found panaeolus cinctulus and psilocybe cyanescens all in the PNW region.

So the last time i found a good patch in a bed of roses with what must be alder wood chips, i grabbed a chunk of wood that was thick with myceliumā€”i spread some wood chips to nearby areas that seemed promising and i brought some home and put it in a plastic cup with cardboard scraps. After about a month, this is what the cardboard looks like:

So now Iā€™m spreading the cardboard far and wide for future foragersā€”which makes me wonder how many spots Iā€™ve found were deliberately spreadā€¦

Good on you spreading patches for others!

Pro tip:  Put the myc you bring back (stem butts, chips, ect) directly to new chips and skip the cardboard.  Cardboard myc often goes anemic very quickly and has trouble making the jump back to wood.  Once I started transferring directly to wood my success rate jumped to the high 90s.

With any luck weā€™ll have every town/city poppinā€™ with Allenii and Cyans within 5 years. Also want to start spreading some subaeruginosa spawn around.

Thx for the pro tip!  Iā€™m going to start skipping the cardboard and spreading the wood chips directly.

Even after 5+ years of hunting/gathering, Iā€™m still such a noobā€”i would have never made it this far without the shroommunityā€”so thanks to everyone for ā€œbeing there.ā€

Now, Iā€™m not really even foraging for myself so much as spreading the spores for others and giving away most of my findsā€¦ on a personal level, this is the closest thing to religion that Iā€™ve ever experienced.

Hereā€™s a question for seasoned foragersā€”but first, context:

Iā€™ve been finding actives in the east bay for just about five years and although Iā€™ve found flushes in similar areas, i have yet to see the exact same spot fruit more than onceā€”even in places where mycelial network flourishes and i find flushes that have yielded dozens of cyans and/or allenii.

Having said that, most of the past few years Iā€™ve left town during the fall / winter holidays right when the rain and cooler temperatures are hitting and i canā€™t say for sure that one or more spots hasnā€™t bloomed when Iā€™m out of town. Usually, I check as many spots as i can when i return and Iā€™ve never found anything in the same spot twice.

So i guess my question is how often do you harvest from the same spot more than once?

I hunt mostly allenii (which donā€™t fruit as many times per season as cyans) but probably 2/3 of my spots fruit consistently every year. They do all fruit at different times though. I had a couple spots last year that produced huge flushes of huge mushrooms, but this year conditions werenā€™t optimal for those spots and they started flushing pins and most of them aborted or were very small fruits that I didnā€™t even waste my time harvesting. I have one cyan spot that Iā€™ve only harvest from for the last two seasons, but even that has produced both years. It didnā€™t flush out as well this year as it did last year, but thatā€™s kind of the luck of the draw as is said.

Iā€™ve been foraging for about a decade or so. Most of the original spots I found flushed for as many as 5 years, and then stopped all together. In general I personally get about 4-5 years on one spot, and then Iā€™m on to another. I imagine those old spots that stalled will eventually flush againā€¦ā€¦
