step by step

I'm new to this and shroomery seems to be a very supportive group. I have looked through multiple threads to see what mistakes I have made from inoculation the fruiting. There might be many...BUT...it seems as though mabye a lot of the issues people have can be fixed once identified. So here I go.

During inoculation only one hole was used to see what would happen.

During colonization the foil tops were left loose on the top of the jars.
a flush of beautiful white fuzz quickly took over the 1/2 pint jars and stopped.
after about 6 weeks, the mycelium seemed to stop growing.

Prepped my perlite for the chamber, dunked the (80-100% colonized) birthed cakes for 20hours, and added the cakes (some upside down) to the chamber.

THE CHAMBER: ~76degrees F, 90+ humidity, with filtered air cycling twice a day for an hour, light for 10hours, misted about every 2 days

I noticed a cake I had touched with bare hands had developed a green thumbprint and was removed from the chamber. The removed cake was slightly damp and rubbery and appeared to have white throughout.

Well, another couple of weeks have passed and I am not seeing much action from the cakes and I thought I would reach out for advice.
Can anyone spot my mistakes and are there ways to fix them?
What can I do at this point? (The perlite in the photo is about 3 weeks old)

Thank you for your time and knowledge

Another dunk and then roll in verm may help, But that's been a long time. Next round make more holes to innoc it will help with faster colonization. No need to exchange filtered air, just let them be.  Follow this to a T :mushroom2:

Edit: also, use 1/2 pint WIDE mouth if you can

The one you removed was just bruised. It likely bruised because those cakes look super dry. You're supposed to remove the dry verm barrier, is that what's on those cakes? After dunking the cakes, roll them in vermiculite to encourage a proper microclimate along their surface.

Those are gonna need some misting, but don't go crazy; cakes getting soaked and then drying out isn't what you want. I'd probably go ahead and dunk & roll in verm too.

Since you aren't using an SGFC, I'd ditch the perlite and run either a water tub or fruit them in ziploc baggies

So anyway, uh...

I used the regular mouth and it has been just over a month and out of 14 jars, I birthed my first today. Even they are the same volume it seems like the wide mouth may go a little faster but what you lose in height you gain in diameter so i'll be interested in what others say here.

The only point of widemouth is that you can easily get the cake out of it without breaking it

It is interesting that the cakes look dry. I had just sprayed them maybe 2 hours prior.
What do you look for to know if the cakes are moist enough??
