monotub feels like a bit of a fail - more questions
    #28008719 - 10/21/22 03:02 AM (2 years, 2 months ago)

Monotub: unmodified (really useful box 50L: H23, W44, D71cm)
Liner: yes (black bin bag)
Substrate: coco coir + vermiculite, pasteurised
Grainspawn: dark oats, rinsed, boiled, bagged, pc'd, sealed
Inoculation: print > agar > LC > grainspawn

What I did:
Initially the box was sealed until aerial mycelium covered the substrate. Mist beads were present all over the mycelium. Then the lid was flipped with small spacers and sometimes off, as I noticed fuzzy feet I thought more FAE would be good. However, the first fruits dried a little so I kept the lid on (flipped w/spacers). After harvesting the fruits that started to dry (they stopped growing), lots of fruits stayed tiny, only a few grew large. Fruits only appeared on the sides of the tub, none appeared in the middle (yet). The larger ones seem to be growing a few at a time - 3, 4 grow large... I harvest them, and then other start growing larger. It's been just over a week since some fruits here and there have been ready. They arent growing tightly packed together like all the photos I'm seeing here. So far only 4 grams of dried fruits have been harvested, which seems really small for such a large tub.

What am I doing wrong? Any reason I'm only getting fruits here and there rather than tightly packed fruits growing together? Should I be worried no fruits have appeared in the middle of the tub and only on the sides? When should I dunk and initiate the second flush? How do I get my yield up?

How much coir, vermiculite and grain did you use?

Were the tub contents spread out particularly flat or are the sides lower than the center?

I have to ask if you've grown in smaller tubs before trying the 50L.
Large tubs are not that easy if you are new.

17 liters grainspawn + substrate rough ratio 1:2. Surface is fairly flat.

You should honestly start with a shoebox or a smaller pasty easy dial to get a good feel for what is required before scaling up.
There are a lot of various to consider with large tubs, clean spawn becomes super critical as does moisture levels.

Any tips for learning with what I’ve got or should I buy smaller tubs?

The fact that it's only growing around the sides and not in the center makes me think its either:
1) fighting off a contam
2) the cvg is not at proper field capacity
3) there is too much nutrition in the center due to inadequate spawn/substrate mixing

In regards to the learning process, I usually recommend following this path:
Tutorial - Spore syringe + PF Tek
Beginner - Print to agar + grain spawn + shoebox
Intermediate - Clone to agar + grain master + grain to grain + unBODified monotub

After you're a solid intermediate grower, you'll understand what's going on enough to start experimenting with more Advanced techniques and theories you'll pick on your own.

I also suggest making a bookmark folder on your phone/computer and saving interesting teks along the way so you can easily refer back to them. I highly recommend reading through all of bod's and pastywhyte's teks. See here.

The water content of the substrate becomes a limiting factor at high grain ratios. It makes hitting field capacity more important.

I'd look on the bright side, its giving up the goods, just slowly.

If it was mine I would let it keep giving it up till it stopped, then do a soak and see if the second flush was better. If the second flush is better I would suspect the water content of the original substrate was low and adjust future grows accordingly.

If the sub is fully colonized & healthy, I'd cut it in 2, 3 or 4 pieces and put in smaller independent containers, then mist and fan like hell.

No August, just no.

:wtf3:

To Pickle Rick, the previous 2 posters gave you good answers.
Next time focus on your field capacity for the larger tubs, mix and compress well.

:wow: Sorry if I gave shite advice, didn't mean to. After my original incursion, I dropped off the radar for over a year, so my learning curve stopped short :nowaitstopdammit:

The crap advice I gave is because I have a shoebox that I just keep misting and fanning (after 2 flushes), and the thing still produces fruit. 50g here, 20g there... substrate keeps shrinking, but no rot or mold or anything other than fruits about every 2 weeks.

All good with the tough love... but I do like to try shit out (sometimes) just to see how it fails.

TLDR;
OP listen to people who have more than 75 posts - sorry! :shamecube:
