ashwaganda grows?
    #28006588 - 10/19/22 03:03 PM (1 year, 3 months ago)

anyone attempt to grow it? imagine needs a few years to get large enough roots for harvest but could be wrong  small amount of info that its hady to zone 6 to overwinter. i am curious if harvested anually in commercial opperations or if grown for a few years to increase strength and yeild. bet in this day and age prob harvest anually and perhaps propigated via roots so has a stronger start which allows yearly harvest as prob would be more expensive if took 4+ years liek ginseng.

would be interesting if could be commercially grown in more zones aswell perhaps in greenhouses.

I know some of u hippies have tried it so would love to hear experiences

I grew one . it seeded red pods like a rose one year . my second or third year after I bought it in a 4in pot . they had many many seeds in the pods if I remember. I never harvested the root .

With ashwagandha since the roots are the source of the botanicals, I imagine it might be really strong to find a suitable mycorrhizal species. That would allow rampant root growth and a bigger harvest.

I just found this study that tested 5 mycorrhizal species and found they all increased the metabolite production of ashwagandha, therefore more potent withanolide production and a more useful crop.  Best results for the withanolides were with ashwagandha inoculated with Rhizophagus irregularis.

I grew it in the garden this year (zone 4). I treated it like an annual, and I got about a pound of dried root from 9 plants and lots of seed for next year. I'm sure the roots of older plants are more potent medicine, but I am happy with my harvest. I've been making a decoction with it and burdock root, and it has been delightful.

One could probably treat it like tomatos and grow in green houses or poly tunnels in my region and get a pretty good harvest

oh nice zone 2 ish here i think ie gets to -40 but imagine summers are pretty close length. did u grow from seed? or was it plants from greenhouse? very cool! need to find some seeds. 50 grams a plant isnt too bad months or so of product if take daily

neat find about the myc creon!  imagine would use similar strains to other nightshade family like tomatoes that glomulas/rizophagus is pretty standard.

Seed grown. I got my seeds from Strictly Medicinal Seeds, and I started them the first week of April. Very highly germination rate, I gave most of the plants away and kept the 10 most robust ones. They grow similarly to eggplant if that give you an idea about what conditions they like. One successful season will provide you with enough seeds that you’ll never have to buy them again. I harvested immediately after the plants got whacked by frost - which happened mid September this year.

An herbalist friend of mine has been cultivating it for her tincture business in the region for the last 6 years and it’s one of her most popular medicines so there is potentially a market for it out there. If you’re trying hustle it’s not a bad choice for your repertoire.

Next year I’m going to deep fork their garden beds and actually fertilize and water them as I took a kind of hands off approach this year.
