yeah the glass plates would probably just destroy the wrap at that point, seems finicky. i wrap mine pretty immediately after they dry & see no reason not to, but i get that it would be pretty convenient to just toss the foil wraps on the shelf out of the PC. josex mentioned somewhere he swears pores can find their way through folded foil (why he doesnβt recommend storing syringes in foil long term) but yeah the upper limit would be cool to know for people who may wanna go that route

Yeah, I'm not too keen on trusting the foil completely myself.

me either, anything not truly sealed is pretty suspect to me. not hard to give em the olβ p9 seran wrap after they dry imo

updated the OP a little (added a link to ur post on wrapping, psycho!!)
also, a thought crossed my mind for potential long term storage right out of the PC. might be possible to put the foil wrapped plates in an oven bag before PCing & just leave them in the oven bag sealed on the shelf until you need to use them. i doubt it's something i would do often myself, but i might give it a go just to see if it works & give people the option if it's how they want to go about it.

Great decision! This need more attention! Just stocked up to 40 dishes
Thinking about building a petridishholder for my incubation-box (just a box), to save up more space. They are actually easy to build (and not expensive to buy).

thanks shrimps! it just occurred to me that it probably wasnβt being seen in searches since it was in my journal
iβd love to see that petri holder if you have any pics/sketches of what it would look like! right now i just store my empty dishes in a shoebox padded with old socks dishes with agar just get stacked in the corner of my cult shelf

Nice to see this discussion.
With all respect due to Roger Rabbit, I recall seeing him comment some years back that "glass sucks for mycology." That alone put me off of trying to do anything with a stash of old pyrex plates from a university lab that someone had given me.
I finally decided to give them a shot, and now I could never go back. (Except when I run out of glass petris, and run pastyplates to make up the difference)
I had no idea what I was doing, and still don't. That said, I'm pretty satisfied with my current results. My techniques don't quite align with the ones I'm reading about here. I stumbled blindly into no-pour glass petris, and approached them the same way I'd been doing pastyplates. I haven't yet found a compelling reason to change.
I start with my pot o hot agar, and pour it into the petri bottoms arrayed on the countertop. I then leave them, uncovered, until they cool completely.
Once cool, I put the covers on and individually wrap them in foil. They then get PC'ed in an instant pot for 1.5 hours.
I let the instant pot sit overnight, or sometimes much longer if I don't have a chance to get to it. I either pull the fully cooled plates from the instant pot and immediately work with them in my SAB, or I pull them from the instant pot and put them in my SAB for later work. That's usually when I want to free up the instant pot for another batch, and then do all my transfers at once on the third day.
Transfers are a crude process round my way. Unwrap however many plates the master plate will be donating to, and stack them right on top of the still-wrapped plates in the SAB. Let the air settle, then have at it. Repeat until done.
I don't wrap my plates in cling wrap, nor do I do any drying. Condensation has never really been an issue for me with my glass petris.
PC'ed plates never really sit around my place. I'm pretty much making them as I need them. The same holds true for plates that need to be washed, and plates that have just been washed. I'm usually running transfers to free up plates that I need to run more transfers. I kind of like having a limited supply, it keeps me sharp and organized. The dish and storage burden is so spread out that I barely notice it.
I keep wondering if I should start wrapping my plates with parafilm after transfers. I keep not getting any further than just sort of thinking about it.
-------------------- Beware of advice- even this.

yeah, part of the reason i wanted to do this write up was because there was very little collective info on glass petris & a lot of the stuff i found by searching was just old posts hating on them lol. i fucking love mine & wanted to encourage people to try them out
when i say i dry my petris, i more mean dry the outside so that the cling wrap or parafilm doesnβt slip off. i donβt find condensation much of an issue with them either
you donβt see contam by not wrapping your plates? maybe the pyrex ones have a better seal, but i saw rampant contams pretty quick when i didnβt wrap mine lol. i learned that lesson really fast
@shrimps: thatβs so sexy!! i love little diy projects, definitely a good way to keep them safe!! share pics if you get around to making your own, iβd love to see it (:

Yeah, that's kind of what I figured.
The pyrex covers are pretty substantial, and I think the weight holds them in place pretty well.
I do see some contaminated plates, but not very many, and the nature of the contamination suggests to me that it's mostly due to my less than stellar transfer techniques.

iβd absolutely love to try out some pyrex plates, they look beautiful & i know the quality is top notch. they are just so pricey to buy /:
for sure, once you get a handle on things you can kinda infer where youβre getting contams from. a wrap isnβt gonna hurt anything but hey, if it ainβt brokeβ¦

Iβve said it before but Iβll say it again in hopes of helping people get over the price tag of glass. Call your local university, many have reuse programs or recycle centers. They are not always available but when they are you can find glass petris for 25-50 cents a pop, at least at my local university. Sometimes the deal is better, Iβve gotten cases of hundreds for 10$. Highly recommend the effort. Quite frankly they often have a lot of highly discounted lab equipment. Many of these programs are open to the general public as well, I have never set foot in a university in my life but still reap those benefits from time to time.

the corning dishes look so nice. would love to grab those or pyrex ones one day
they go so great with cling wrap, don't they?
@moopers: no problem!! thanks for your natalensis thread, it's so incredibly helpful to have all that info compiled in one place!!
@kirkeng: that's an excellent thing to keep in mind. i knew they had old lab equipment & stuff for sale but never thought about the petri dishes. would be very awesome to pick up a bunch on the low!!
