ooh, good question bongo!
my 75mm plates are 15mm deep, the 90mm plates are 20mm deep. the 15mm deep plates handle no pour just fine. just don't overfill them. i'll add that consideration to the OP
edit: changed OP & added a link to the specific plates i use as well

That's great to know.
I was given 10 x 100mm x 15mm glass (borosilicate) petris by the person I bought my second hand flow hood from. One of my pet hates is throwing out plastic petris so I reckon it's time to dig out the glass stash and run a batch of 10 this weekend.
Maybe I'll invest in some smaller ones β it makes a lot of sense to keep the large ones for expanding clean transfers to go to grain and the smaller ones for quick transfers away from potentially dirty cultures.
You get much condensation with no pour? Maybe I need to go back and re-read the whole thread. Thanks for posting this!

oh fuck yeah! i recently got a flowhood & the glass petris are kick ass for it. i hated pouring them but they are very nice for no pour imo
i said this up in the OP too but the 75mm are great workhorse plates for stuff youβre not trying to grow out all the way. i also put the 75mm plates to grain & rarely use my 90mm but if youβre used to 90mm or just like they larger plate they are excellent to send to grain
i donβt get any bad condensation & the condensation that is there clears up after being on the shelf for a few days. i dry mine for a few hours in front of the flowhood, would leave them for a day in the SAB. if there is a big temp swing or something iβll get slight condensation on plates but itβs easily remedied & that happens with all types of agar containers

So leaving them unwrapped in front of the flow hood but lids on?

Thatβs what I do. They come out of the foil in the SAB right before I use them.
And just to double check, you let them sit in the foil for extended periods of time. I.E. days
I make a bunch at once and save them for weeks. Pour the plates, let solidify, wrap stacks of 4 in foil, PC at 1bar for 20min, let cool to room temp overnight, put in zip lock bag until needed.

And when you wrap them, are you using parafilm or grafting tape?
I'm finding the extra weight of the base and the lid puts more stress on the wrap β I find I need to be a bit more careful handling them so that the wrap doesn't work loose.

i personally use a 1β-2β wide roll of cling wrap, wrapped around twice typically. you do need to be a bit more conscientious when wrapping the glass petris. the wider rolls of cling wrap work wonderfully for me

I use Parafilm. I havenβt had that problem, but once theyβre wrapped, I donβt really handle them much so π€·

Excellent write up! Thank you for providing the information to us. Just stumbled upon these dishes, 10 each size, secondhand, traded for a bottle of wine! Seems like a good deal right?!
Gonne use your tek this weekend!

Sounds like a nice addition.
To be sure: - You donβt do anything to the dishes to get them dry? Reading that they could be quite wet when taken uit of the PC - When you take them out of the PC, wrapped in aluminium foil. Do you put them in the ziplock with the aluminium foil still wrapped?
*not sure if I could ask these questions in this journal.. hope it is alright.

When the PC gets back to room temp, I do one of two things.
1) If theyβre being stored for a long time, I take them out and straight into zip lock bags, foil and all and straight into the lab refrigerator at 5Β°C
2) If theyβre being used soon, I just put them in my SAB.
They always have some condensation, but usually nothing major. I just ignore it and use as normal. After a week the condensation disappears on its own. Sometimes for unknown reasons, Iβll have one with a pool of water in the bottom. With these, I still just use as normal, but in the SAB, I just pour the excess water out right before I do my transfer or whatever. After I Parafilm wrap it, I usually sanitize the outside with IPA just because I get nervous about any nutrient water from pouring it out sticking to the side and letting bacteria migrate up past the Parafilm.
Pre pour has never made plates as immediately perfect as normal, but for the ease of so few steps, I love it.

Hereβs a pic I just took this morning. Itβs dated 22OCT, and you can see thereβs still some condensation.

you can totally ask questions here! i wanted it to be an open forum for glass petri questions. otherwise i could have just made it so no one can reply
i donβt like, hand dry the dishes but i do leave them in the SAB/flowhood for a bit so the outside dries off. cling wrap will slip off if the glass is wet. condensation almost always clears up on its own & tbh i think itβs something people worry about a bit too much. it should go away after a bit, or the temperature in the room is just different than the plates & you may get a bit regardless of the plate being plastic or glass or whatever
i just personally take them out of the foil in the hood/SAB & wrap them in stacks with seran wrap once dry. but you should be able to just put the foil wrapped plates straight into a ziplock bag (make sure itβs a fresh bag, as they come sterile out of the package). you could probably use an oven bag & sterilize that in the PC too if you wanted to reuse a bag

Regarding the wet Petris out of the PC. You can also heat up your oven to about 80C / 176F also put them for like a couple of minutes into the oven. I don't pre pour my dishes and dry them always in the oven. I don't see why that shouldn't work also with pre-poured dishes You can just turn the oven off and let them cool down in the oven.
As long as they stay in the aluminium foil wrapped, they stay contam-free.

i would be worried the oven may dry out the agar pretty quick. iβve seen people like josex swear contams can make their way through foil, but YMMV with that. i can neither confirm nor deny
