just did a run using the ziplock pp5s & i donβt think iβm going back to foil. this made the βunwrappingβ process so much easier & itβs nice to have the reusability of plastic. they fit my 75mm dishes perfectly too & with stacks of 6 i can do a fair bit at a time. i think iβll add some polyfil filters on the top (i guess the bottom technically?) & have some dedicated bottles for plates. i might update the OP & recommend this over foil; i think this would be a really great way to do these plates in the SAB. way less air disturbance & you can let them dry on the shelf if you really want
also, my unwrapped petri showed a contam a day or two ago. i do have to mention that it did get bumped pretty aggressively & the lid didnβt fully come off but moved enough to cause some air to get in. before that tho i was picking it up every day & moving it around & it looked clean. im gonna do another test next time i make agar bc i think itβs viable, but, at least with the glass plates i have, they require a bit more careful handling. iβll probably keep wrapping my plates just because i donβt want some random contam to fuck me over but i think itβs cool that thereβs the option of storing without wrapping. thank you for doing some experimenting with that sir p! itβs excellent info to have on the thread & i really appreciate how much youβve added to it

That is rad.
It would be great to get to a point where I'm using zero consumable packaging (don't wrap plates after inoculating, but I do wrap them in foil). Definitely some food for thought there.

im fully with ya. itβs nice to be zero waste with shit if i can be & this method is one step closer (thx derrayld & others who mentioned this method!)
if you wanted to avoid wrapping but still wanted them to be protected after using them for transfers & stuff i could see using pp5s/metal containers like this to store dishes during colonization. like only open & close in SAB or in front of the flow hood. it would make it kind of annoying to check on cultures or just pick one out for transfers tho. maybe the smaller containers like this could be used just for storage of a few dishes or specific culture something
or pony up, raw dog & just leave em unwrapped in the open lol

Not criticizing, but just curious. What do you all have against throwing out parafilm or cling wrap after a single use?

I'd like to get to zero waste if possible. Both as a personal matter and as a way to develop more sustainable techniques for the future.
I compost all of my biological materials already (spent substrate, agar, etc.)
Personally, I don't have a background in microbiology and never got the memo about wrapping petri dishes. I started off with pp5 containers, which are still in the mix, and half-pint jars and whatnot. When I finally stepped up to use an old stash of pyrex petris a friend had given me, I didn't know about wrapping them and never started. I was several years into glass petri world when I realized that most people wrap their plates. I don't know if it's particular to the glass petris I have, or the way I store them, but keeping my plates unwrapped has never been an issue for me, so I never felt the need to start. Part of it is just not wanting to switch up my routines, didn't want to add another variable to the process.
To put things in historical perspective, I let those glass petris sit in a bucket in my back yard for years before cleaning them up and using them. Making pastyplates from pp5 containers all that time. Why? Because Roger Rabbit posted a bunch about how much glass sucks for mycology, and about how disposable plastic plates are the best option. No way in hell I was going that route, as it seemed over-the-top wasteful to me. So I found the pastyplate tek and went with that. Not realizing I was sitting on hundreds of dollars worth of glassware that a lot of people would do extreme things for. (Of course now, when I'm in peak agar mode, I need all my glass petris AND all my pp5's lol)

i have nothing against it at all! i think in my earlier post i said i was planning on wrapping my dishes still just to be safe. i donβt judge anyone for using disposable petris or bags or anything like that, individual action is unfortunately a drop in the bucket when it comes to lessening waste & all things have pros & cons that weight differently for different people. but if i can minimize how much plastic im burning through without making my workflow & results suffer iβd like to because why not? itβs one less thing to have to constantly buy & itβs one molecule of water less going back into the bucket. & if people do wanna go the zero waste method i think itβs good to let them know they have some options which is why iβm interested in seeing if wrapping is something that can be eliminated if someone would like to do so
@b traven: well written post as always. the pyrex dishes seem to have a tighter tolerance so they may work better unwrapped than the amazon plates, but even the one test plate i did only showed any contam after i fumbled it a bit. itβs a shame RR & some other members shit talked them so much in the earlier days of cultivation because i pretty much did the same thing (was not lucky enough to be sitting on a ton of pyrex plates, though ;p). once i decided to take the plunge & get some glass plates i realized they actually kinda kick ass, especially for no pour containers. i feel that about having all hands on deck with agar, iβve def had to bust out the pasty plates every now & again lol. i finally have a big enough stockpile of glass that i donβt need to, but they were so nice to have on hand

How are folks labeling their glass petris? China marker seems to be pulled off by the saran wrap on the plate stacked above, and sharpie becomes a vague smear after the first iso spritz.

Masking tape. Then you can just transfer the tape to the grain jar, then to the tub.
However, no need to spray your plates with iso. Also, I put my plates in bags now so I just sharpie on those. Whatever works for you.
