"Empty" substrate: how not to waste the mycelium? (Renew?)
    #28004064 - 10/18/22 12:31 AM (2 years, 2 months ago)

Hello wizards!

So i am watching my cubensis cake which fruited 3 times and shrinked the substrate a little (like, well, if its eating it lol).

What i see is a lot of white that makes me think the mycelium is alive and rocking. I rehydrated throughly and I was thinking of adding some coco coir to renew the nutritional value, maybe moving the substrate too so that the coir penetrates.

Overall, i find a waste to throw away a clearly alive mycelium just out of food. No?

Coir is not nutritious, that is why we use it. Keep hydrating it after every flush and keep rocking it until it stops flushing. In the meantime get other projects going if you haven't already.

Coir won't add nutrition and trying to add anything nutritious to a non sterile environment will create contamination. Better to bury spent cakes and something might pop up. You may get one or two small flushes but it's unlikely you'll get anything much after 3 flushes.
If you have a garden then you can chuck spent cakes and subs on the compost heap and it will make some nice soil over time. Remember, nature doesn't waste anything.
You're far better off spore printing or cloning and starting again. Plenty of info on the search engine or in bod's all in one on his signature.

Ok very clear I was just sad about throwing away lively mycelium (also very nice strain).
I'll try to study how to spore print, menawhile i have 3 other cakes to wait for

When you grow anything you need to focus on diminishing returns and make a decision if keeping the grow going has any value.

Here's info from Bod on spore printing for when your other cakes fruit.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24461957

If you follow his signature, you can find a whole list of productive, easy teks that any beginner can learn.

We've all been there, we spend months watching our shrooms grow and we don't want to say goodbye.
Like DERRAYLD said, it's far better practice to learn when to cut your losses and move onto more fruitful projects.
You've gained some skills now learn more and become an even better cultivator.
All the best.

Lovely answers, very supportive. Yeah after 2 generous batches and a third going slowly but well, I kinda went emotive with my shroomies heh studying the print thing right now!

For the rest, one of the cakes I made (hawaiian one) is a bit experimental but anyway seems colonizing in 4-5 days at least
