recommended plates for agar

I just poured my 2nd batch of plates yesterday and I'm currently using disposable condiment cups. What do you agar pros recommend? Plastic petri dishes or glass ones? I'm interested in seeing what's preferred. The little cups I have are working but are pretty flimsy.

I've never used glass ones, so I can't comment on them, but to me the process of cleaning and sterilizing them every use seems like a lot of work. I realize it cuts down on plastic waste and the cost potentially, but I don't do a lot of agar work. I end up buying four sleeves of twenty sterile plastic agar dishes about two or three times a year.
The size I use is 90 mm wide by 15 mm deep, and they work great. If anything, a slightly smaller dish would probably work just as well and consume less plastic.

i use 70-75mm glass plates & i love them personally. i know thereβs some glass petri hate on here but i really find them pretty easy to work with & you can do them no pour if youβre like me & kind of hate pouring lol. you still gotta use cling wrap/parafilm to wrap them & you do have to wash & dry them which iβm sure some people really hate (it is pretty tedious ngl) but i would rather reuse & save money on repeat purchases of dishes than buy stacks all the time. to each their own. the glass petris afford you some great visibility
you can easily sterilize glass petris in the oven/toaster oven or by just PCing them along side your agar media bottle when youβre gonna pour. oven bags or tinfoil are great for wrapping them for sterilization.

Thanks! I do so many damn dishes already I'm not scared of having to wash some more glass. From what I understand, there's going to be an upfront cost, but then I'm set for the long haul. Did you buy yours online?

yeah itβs really not that bad imo but i understand why people prefer plastic petris if they really hate washing them. what i do is try to wash my dishes as iβm done using them instead of emptying & cleaning 40 dishes at once.
i got mine on amazon, you might have to search around & some dishes are hella pricey but you can definitely find 10 packs for about $25 or so. for me the upfront cost was definitely worth it & you make your money back more & more with every use

I've used plastic petris for years and I recently bought a set of glass ones. Have to say there are advantages to each but I think glass will be my go to for the forseeable future. Much less waste which I like a lot. Easy to clean and reuse. Also kind of has that old school microbiologist feel.

I use the 100x15 Pyrex borosilicate glass dishes. I hate the plastic because I always break them on accident.
However, after the cost of water, fuel for heat, foil and time, I can tell you for sure glass is more expensive. Plus itβs really hard to pour them in a big stack because of the weight. I only stack 4 high.

Thanks for this, I've just been gifted some glass petris by a member here and need to learn how to sterilise them. I got good results with smaller plastic petris but hate the plastic waste. Got about 15 poured plastic petris left and then I'll swith over to my glass petris. I'm curious how you do no pour in them, surely they boil over?

No they don't boil over. I primarily do no pour glass, wrap stacks in foil and pc.

Do you have condensation issues with the no pour PC? Can you detail your no pour procedure?

glad someone else here is on the no pour glass petri wave lol. i tried pouring my glass petris once & hated it
this is exactly how i do it & i donβt get any boil over either. just donβt fill them excessively full & youβll be fine. i just pour mine exactly like i would any other no pour container, wrap a stack of them in foil, PC for 30min or whatever & then let them cool in the PC. then put them in your SAB or in front of the flow hood & let them dry a bit longer (the outsides can get slippery & tricky to use seran wrap on if you donβt air them out first ime). thereβs gonna be some condensation, but just let them dry in front of the hood or in the SAB for awhile before wrapping & you should be fine. i find the condensation ends up clearing up on its own after a bit even when wrapped, but derrayld may have some tricks i donβt utilize

It's nice to hear everyone's input on this topic. I do feel bad about the plastic waste I generate with this hobby, and I would like to switch to glass petris eventually. The idea of having to wash and dry them every single time I work with agar is pretty daunting, just because I fucking hate doing dishes. But no-pours seem easy...

im actually washing dishes to make a run of plates right now. it does kind of fucking suck to wash like 40 plates all at once, especially if youβre someone who hates washing dishes by hand, but honestly itβs only a problem if youβre lazy like me & let them pile up. if you wash your plates as youβre done with them & store them for later use itβs not nearly as bad as having to wash all of them at once. if you clean them out & then soak them in a vinegar/water mix you should be able to let them air dry without getting water spots, but i just use a microfiber cloth & dry them right away
no pours are sick & itβs nice to be able to no pour with glass petris. i love no pour plates in general but the visibility of traditional no pour containers is pretty bad. the glass petris are a great balance of reusability & visibility for me. the trade off is having to do a little extra work when it comes time to make a new batch, but iβll take that over throwing out plastic petris every time iβm done with then (no shade to anyone using plastic at all, corporations & big business are the real problems with that ecological impact but just a personal thing)

I'm with derrayld and hazyhorse. no pour glass is my favorite. condensation is not an issue and clears up naturally like hazy mentioned.
but i gotta confess i got quite fond of pp5 plastic containers with screw lids aswell .. no plastic wrap needed, they never break and after cleaning them out i just throw them in a pot with boiling water for a while. then do no pour and in the pc stacked and covered in foil. i got plenty of them in use too..

pp5 containers are also waaaaay easier to manhandle. i do miss how much dexterity youβre afforded in picking up the pp5s to take transfers. i do usually pick up my glass plates to take transfers but itβs a much more delicate operation

pasty plates kick ass. i just turn them over, squeeze the base, and the agar pops out clean. i give them a wipe with iso and stack them. easy as pie

the pp5s i had were the thick screw top ziplocks, so i never got to experience the squeeze & drop method personally. but it always seemed like a kick ass way to do a2g

God thisβ¦I kept dropping them thinking wow theyβre so durable! One of my agar plates has a crack in emβ¦does it make me a bad person if I buy more from amazon and then return them saying they were broken?
