Pasteurising my vermeculite and manure
    #28002688 - 10/17/22 06:17 AM (2 years, 2 months ago)

Hi all, new to the group and cultivation.

I just wanted to find out if it is absolutely necessary to pasteurize my manure and vermeculite for my bulk substrate?

I'm inoculating two jars tonight and getting all the other components ready in the next two weeks.

My only concern is with the manure and vermeculite.

Also, if I've seen people put a layer of perlite under the substrate. Is that necessary or will the 80/20 manure and vermeculite mix be alright?

Thanks in advance

If you're using manure then yes, it needs to be pasteurised if spawning to open air. You can just use coir and verm,  or straight coir instead. Most people don't bother with manure these days, coir and verm do just fine.
I used to use manure years ago and it's alright but totally unnecessary. Much easier to just pour hot water on a block of coir and wait a bit.

Ok, good to know.

I'm struggling to find coco coir in my area though. But if I'm able to get some. Will unpasteurized coco coir and vermeculite work fine? Do I need to hydrate the verm?

"If you're using manure then yes, it needs to be pasteurised..."

Coir/Verm does not need to be pasteurized.

Use a coir tek.
