New still air box 4
#28002331 - 10/16/22 07:59 PM (2 years, 2 months ago) |

The basic still air box I made has been annoying me, but I’m doubling down since there’s no way I’ll buy a laminar flow hood. Therefore, this one has a crystal clear top and arm hole covers for taking a break or letting agar set. I also poured 4kgs of lead shot into the lip and sealed it with epoxy to add weight. Then, I used a silicone gasket on the bottom to keep the box from sliding around the desk. I use the space beside the rack as a trash can for used parafilm and foil.

I like the arm holes + covers. Is it just pvc pipe glued into the holes and complementary pvc caps?

Correct. 6in PVC x 1.25in long glued into the holes with a bead of hot glue. The 6in caps are ridiculously deep for this application but they’re tapered, so if I cut them shorter it’ll be too tight instead of just a quick loose fit so I left them alone. Arm hole spacing is 18.5in center to center.

Ooo very nice indeed! I'm wanting to build a new SAB with better visibility. What material did you use for the top, plexiglass?

Yes, the top is 1/8” acrylic secured/sealed with a bead of hot glue. It’s 24in long by however wide that box is. I didn’t measure the width, just marked it and cut.

You’re better off removing the gloves and using it as an SAB, homie.
Edit: and why does it look like there’s a cupcake slapped onto the back of it?

My bet is its to try to equalize the negative pressure through a filter system of some sort, instead of pressure equalizing though the openings where the lid attaches.

I think it's a HEPA filter vent. I think it's resourceful, but the arm holes are too close together for it to be comfortable for me. Still, I've used worse contraptions in the past.
I saw some older veterans that are still rocking glove boxes, and I didn't even question any of it because of their seniority here. I admit mine is over-engineered, so it can be critiqued as well...

As far as I’m concerned, glove boxes are for only for specific applications, such as working under an inert atmosphere, although I will admit that this is one of the areas in which I am rigidly dogmatic. Which old heads are still rocking glove boxes? (Also, I prefer to believe that homeboy’s got a cupcake dispenser on the back of his glove box.)

personally i would love a cupcake halfway into my SAB routine
but yes GBs are really for separating yourself from fumes, stuff like that. there are several good reasons not to use them for mycology

I agree with you on the glovebox and other contraptions. I'm a recent convert, I admit I used those things in the past, so I'm not judging anyone.
I don't even want to name any names, but I posted it in the New Tools of the Trade thread, and I did ask for feedback on it. I guess oldhat might be a better description than veteran, and he isn't a TC, so I don't really know where I'm going with this. I just was surprised to hear my SAB was over-engineered (that's fair), with a shiny new glovebox with 4" armholes being shown as the more desirable option. Granted, it was bigger, and bigger is better, but all the latest consensus that I could find was to use a SAB as a SAB, no attached gloves (sleeves), and make sure the armholes are 6 to 8 inches in diameter.
I'm really working on my manners, so I'm really not wanting to step on anyone's toes. I do think that there is a sticky on gloveboxes and what not for a reason though. I just used my new SAB for the first time 3 days ago, so I'm anxiously awaiting to see if any satellite contams occur in the next couple of weeks. So far so good, I feel confident in using a SAB for the first time now. I also know why I had so many failures in the past, not knowing proper SAB technique until recently.

Mine has the hepa filter because the glove movement makes vacuum. I put window seal strip on the lid so I hope for a air tight environment besides the hepa. I was having infection after infection I was blaming bad spore prints. Now using this box, gloves and same spores, I have lost 3 of 40ish jars. I can't control the air conditioning, i'm sure it would be considered a micro aggression. LUL
Also the gape between is small cause I have a bad wrist, also because pipe joints used there is a bit of a loss in angle I can turn arms.

I see. Not having control over the air conditioning is something I never considered, that may very well be a valid reason to use a glove box. Points for creativity for hepa filtering the vent!

Surely you have enough pillow/boxes/anything to block an air vent for a couple hours to avoid using a glove box?

It is a ceiling vent, I could use painters tape on it and close it every time but I'd rather just have this SAB ready too go =)

Thanks! It works perfect and feels like it’s glued to the desk. It actually takes a conscious effort to move it now instead of just sliding around every time my arm bumps it. Sooooo much less frustrating.
