Autoclave Vs. PC
    #28002057 - 10/16/22 04:43 PM (2 years, 2 months ago)

I have an experiment going well from one of those companies that offer a  Martha like setup. I purchased two one to fruit and the other to incubate my in. Now that my jars are almost mature, it’s time that I purchased other components. Specifically the sterilization unit.

I used to use PC’s although all I could find at Wally’s was a “jam” maker (is this even a PC?)

So then I went to amaZon and found a unit that is: “ Brand: ORILAO
27L Digital Autoclave Steam Cabinet with Timing Function Trays”

My question is should I just order the autoclave? I wish I could post a direct link to it, or should I continue on the hunt for PC’s?

Thank you for your time, it’s appreciated.

That looks like a UV cabinet. That wouldn't be enough for cooking up grain.

I never found a PC at the big name store (at least in my area). If you have some smaller chain of hardware stores around you, see if they have a site that you can search around on. I lucked out and found a small retailer that had a few prestos on the shelf. If not, can always swipe one from online

https://www.amazon.com/Presto-01781-23-Quart-Pressure-Canner/dp/B0000BYCFU

This is basically the standard for most folks who aren't ready to drop a paycheck on an All-American model. (There is also an induction compatible version for a little more, if that's what your stove is like).

Personally, I use a (very) little 8qt pressure cooker I got at Goodwill for 5$. Even when I was doing strain development work for my university, it was all I needed, cooking 4-6 pint jars at a time suits me fine.

The thing you're linked earlier looks more like a UV sterilizer rather than a pressure sterilizer, and wouldn't work for mycology. Killing bacterial endospores takes a wee bit more effort than giving them a sunburn.

And lastly... what do you mean that your jars are mature? You need to sterilize your material before inoculation, or all you are going to grow is miscellaneous bacteria and molds.

I apologize I didnt know if it was "kosher" to post a link:

Mushie Maefia:

https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Autoclave-Cabinet-Timing-Function/dp/B09Z2722LV/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=L6HLDAPQDIHI&keywords=orilao+autoclave+27l+digital+autoclave+steam+cabinet&qid=1665969747&sprefix=orilao+autoclave+27ldigigtal+autoclave+steam+cabinet%2Caps%2C123&sr=8-1-spons&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.ac2169a1-b668-44b9-8bd0-5ec63b24bcb5&psc=1

Bakedbeings: I was wondering if it will get to the middle of the jars.

Ganddolf: That was my fear if it would work with grain. A I think I will go WBS when I find a proper tek.

Matsc: Thank you for the link!

The reason I am asking now is that all my "Vendor" jars are almost finished. The ones fitted with rubber stoppers, BTW can you re-use the rubber stopper, or will the pressure cooker eat it?

Yeah that cabinet thing is not at all what you want. It's not a pressurized vessel at all, wouldn't do a thing for cooking grain, agar, etc, that we use in mycology.

What you're looking for is something called a "pressure cooker" or "pressure canner". Presto is a good brand without breaking the bank, and relatively easy to find (I've seen 6 and 8 quart models on the shelf at Target and Walmart). The 23qt Presto cooker is more than enough for any hobbyist, as my own experiences at 8qt can indicate. (Genuine lab autoclaves are similar pressure vessels, though with automated heating, built in timers, pressure release regulators, etc, and cost an order of magnitude more than anything we need)

For comparison, this is (the newer version of) what I use: https://www.amazon.com/Presto-8-Quart-Aluminum-Pressure-Cooker/dp/B00006ISG4/

Payed 5$ for it at goodwill, plus another 10$ replacing the gasket. It has served me fine for 10+ years. I'm very small scale, so wide-mouth pint jars are fine for me 99% of the time. (As a note, normal pint jars are ever-so-slightly too tall for it, gotta be wide-mouths. Not sure if the plastic jar lids will fit, I've never had one to play with)

Your key thing to look for is that it can get to, and hold steady at, 15+ PSI. Instant-pots and similar electric pressure cookers are great kitchen tools, but generally hang out around 11 PSI (and fluctuate constantly through their cook cycle) so aren't really optimal for us. Old school jiggle-weight pressure cookers are typically build for 15 PSI, and work perfectly well for home mycology.

Of course, then you get to fight it out with all the old anoraks about how long to cook for when sterilizing. (They all have very strong opinions. I just use the times we used in my labs at university and call it good enough)

FYI The presto 23QT is not much more expensive than the THING you found. Its great for beginners to seasoned veterans. I dont see myself buying a bigger PC for quite a while as i can fit plenty for my needs. Trust me you probably wont need bigger unless growing for profit.

The Presto is actually half the price! About as good a deal as you're going to find these days, without hounding ebay/craigslist/etc.

(My old ass is lamenting that I could have gotten an AA925 for that price back in the day, and didn't. Oh well, not like it would fit on my tiny apartment stove anyway...)

Thanks for all the responses. I went with the 23 quart,
Now Will that blow of the nipple nugget rubber stopper ports that the jars  have on them?

Thank you for the advice,

nah fam, Only pressure would do that but you should have your lids loose (and foil wrapped) when PC'ing to prevent explosions.

Good job on the purchase, you will NOT regret it at all. I plan to use my 23QT till im having to cook twice a week then i will either get another or get an all american
