Mixing grains?
    #28001465 - 10/16/22 07:43 AM (2 years, 2 months ago)

I have three separate grain spawn bags that were all injected with the same syringe. Is it ok to mix all 3 grain bags together when adding substrate?
They’re growing at slightly different rates.

Did you inject it with a spore syringe or LC syringe?

To directly answer your question, yes you can mix all three together. The only down-side to mixing is that if one of the bags is contaminated, you will contaminate all three by mixing them together.

and grains injected with spores are by definition somewhat contaminated

pictures would help diagnose the situation. mixing different grains is not a problem but mixing ok spawn with not ok spawn is

If you’re using bags you probably have enough sub to spawn to small tubs or something similar. Smaller trays/tubs can be easier to manage in my experience.

So I asked this on Munch’s livestream and he suggested three separate shoe boxes if I couldn’t tell if they were contaminated.
They look and smell good lol.
But now my question is, is one pound grain spawn too much for a 6qt shoebox? My friend said I should’ve put it in two separate shoeboxes. But she’s new to the process too …
So I wanted to get more experienced opinions …

Also, I didn’t know how much coco coir could expand!!

I used Munch’s shoebox tek. And I used the field capacity test I’ve seen on here. The inexperienced anxious part of me says it looks dry, but I should just let it be, right? 😬

post pics of stuff if you want more than just speculative answers

usually we do 1qt spawn in a 6qt shoebox. idk how much a
pound is in terms of qts. if it was at field capacity at spawn then it’s probably fine, just don’t open the lid a bunch all the time (let’s out a lot of humidity when you do it constantly) & let it do its thing. all you can do now is wait & see what happens

Ok I’ll try to post in the next couple days.
I have to go back to target in the AM — I bought 3 shoeboxes and only picked up two lids 😖

Yup 1 qt of spawn per shoebox, then add 1 to 4 quarts of coir. Personally for multispore grows, I would only add 2qts of coir. Makes the grow faster. Mix 1.5 qts of coir with the spawn and use the remaining pint as a top layer to cover your grains. Buy more 6qt tubs if your bags contain more than a quart.

As for the coir, if you grab a big handful and squeeze hard, you should get 1-4 drops of water drip out. Add more water or coir to get it there.

That’s what I did, 2:1 … with 1.5 coir mixed with spawn, then 0.5 layered on top.
Yeah I did the field capacity test.

Here’s a pic

It does look a little light but photos can make it really tough to tell due to lighting and different cameras making things look different. Bottom line is if you squeezed it and got 1-5 or so drops out of it, it's perfect. Keep a lid on it until use or it will lose moisture to evaporation and get below field capacity.

if you see dry coir, like actually dry - light colored, mist it. once it finishes colonizing you should see lil beads of water collecting on the myc. if you dont, mist till you do

Thank you! I’ll try 😁 I heard there’s a tendency for people to open and check. And I read on here it’ll probably take 10 days before fruiting? So … I’ll try not to open it for 10 days 😏

Ive mixed grainspawn of different cube strains for shits n giggles

ive also mixed natalensis grainspawn with AA+ grainspawn

and they fruited next to each other

i believe in the mushroom, if the spawn is healthy,
the mycelia will figure things out
it knows whats up
