I've found that my religion is "Ineffable", in that there are no words or theology to describe all of existance. Of course, there's nothing wrong with discussing ideas and philsophy. But to ascribe existance to a term seems limiting IMHO.

I'm probably a census takers nightmare.

(edit)

My life was absorbed by religion for 18 years by my parents. I wasn't allowed to read anything but "Christian" novels or listen to anything but "Christian" music. If they found a fantasy book, they would throw it away. I didn't even know who Pink Floyd was until after I moved out of the damn house. My parents wouldn't let me have black friends either, since they told me that the Bible said that I should "stick to my own kind." I wasn't allowed to wear pants to school until high school, because they aren't ladylike, and the Bible was an excuse for that too. I didn't know what sex was until I was at least 16 years old, because my parents never told me about it. When I was going through some shit in high school, I was taken to a priest who said I was demon possessed and the entire fucking congregation did "lay on hands" on me. For years I thought that they were right.

And all that's not even the half of it.

If I say I hate "religion," I have a good fucking reason to say that. I LIVED the extreme religious lifestyle for most of my life, and it was only until leaving that situation that I realized that there were other ways of thinking. I don't give a fuck if anyone wants to be a fundie Christian like my parents are, hell, my relationship is better then ever with my parents. Even though they send missionaries to try and convert me at my apartment over 200 miles away from where they live, witness tracks in the mail, and said that they won't support me if I persue Philosophy in college (a true Christian doesn't need Philosopy, they said) I still love my parents more then anything. I just don't agree with how I was raised, so sheltered and oppressed in that household. Every night when I was a little girl, I remember them telling me how I was going to burn in hell and be tortured if I didn't accept Jesus. I remember how my parents would smile and be the "happy family" at church, but at home I would be ignored and slapped around. If I ever tried to argue religion, my mouth would be washed out with soap. Even after all of that, I love my parents more then anything.

It's the religion I hate, because they used religion as a basis or "excuse" for all their actions, no matter what they were. They still do this. I've come face to face with religious fanaticism, and want nothing to do with it. A question was asked in this thread, "What religion are you?" and I gave an honest answer. It wasn't an effort to be "edgy" or a "rebel," it was spoken from my heart, from the heat of a religious battle that I've endured through most of my life, first with my parents, and then myself. Nobody can ever say that I haven't experienced the "religious" phenomenon, because fuck, I was embroiled in it. It's taken me years to try and "get over" the experiences I've had because of religion, and I can honestly say with all the red passion in my breast that I HATE IT.

So this is long, but I wanted to state where I stand, and to clear up any "confusion" about why I posted what I did.

Great response Ellemy!

Your story is a perfect example of how religion can be like a disease that locks your mind and spirit within the most limited, controlled space possible.

Anything that robs you of your freedom to choose and your freedom to explore life and question everything is worthy of anyone's truest hatred. At least, those who are able to escape it, and my commendations to you for being in the deepest pits of bullshit and somehow finding your way out.

I was never subjected to religion in the way that you were, yet through growing up and observing what it has done to people close to me, and people all around the world, I can also say that religion is the curse of the planet.

We don't need no thought control

Some people justify religion in that "Religion teaches good lessons and morals." And this makes it OK. Well, at its festering, evil core, religion remains what it was created to be... an effective way of keeping the ignorant masses in good condition to be USED and raped and disposed of.

Aside from that, peace and love to all!

I follow the path of shamanism which is not a religion, but a practice. No beliefs are really needed as first hand experience will soon temper your beliefs with facts. My religion could be said to be quite personal in nature and of no particular denomination. But it is completely possible for a practitioner of shamanism to be a Buddhist, Christian, or a Muslim.

Agnostic, it fits in with my nihilst perspective on life, and I like the teachings of epicurus

Agnostic being "I do not know if there is a god and I do not really give two damns", and nihilist being "In the end it won't matter who you are or what you did because none of this is real or matters". epicurus was like "do whatever floats your boat, and enjoy earthly pleasures"

When one makes up the rules (and then adds to or changes them depending on circumstance) for a totally unprovable belief system, then a delusional mind could call it "true".

I could come up with an equally implausible "theory" that cannot be disproven, but so what?

Science has validity because it offers the ability to predict. The "God's plan" type of belief system offers no insight into how the world works. It also fails on the "ability to deal with hardships" level. Those that believe in God's plan grieve over the loss of a child in the same fashion and depth as those that don't.

I would say that science has validity because it allows us to build things that work. While religion only speaks of miracles, science performs them. Why people have more faith in a God that does nothing for them than a method that does everything for them, I will never ubderstand.

Personally, I have my own sort of religion. A major basis of it is off of buddhism though, I am a firm believer in karma through personal experience as well as certain parts of re-incarnation. I don't think that each life is connected to the previous one when you are reincarnated, which is something that buddhists believe as far as I know. I've never really researched it too much. I personally do not think that there is a "god" as a being, more of as an energy that keeps everything in balance. I don't know, my beliefs are changing, I'm sure in 10 years it will be something completely different.

Re: What religion are you [Re: Huehuecoyotl]

Why does everyone these days seem to want some kind of proof of a belief system?  That is an oxymoron concept if I've ever heard one.  The nature of a "belief" system is subjective, never objective, if one is talking about a higher power.  The definition of faith is believing in something which can't be proven.

I can see that the bullshit in this world can make a cynic and doubter out of anyone.  But once that first step of "believing" in something is taken (kind of like the first time you trust all your weight to a rappelling rope and brake), then it's a breeze.  Just the act of believing in something which your heart says is right begins its manifestation in your life.  Then the crap of the world is impotent.  But, I realize it's a catch-22, without the shield from the world's influence, it's awfully hard to believe in anything.

The thing is, religion and the "Christian" church has really soured a lot of people's attitudes, in just the same manner as the other worldly systems in general.  The things they tell you in church don't make sense, don't seem to help anything at all, complicate matters in your heart, and hurt your feelings.

The best thing I ever did was quit going to church.  I am too intelligent to be handed a worm like a baby bird and be willing to swallow the wriggly SOB whole.  I must dissect.  When I did, I found it wasn't a worm at all!  It was quite tasty, whatever it was.  And now it's all mine, and it's most effective in ways that church dogma and doctrine could never be.

BTW  I consider myself a Buddhist Jesus Freak of no affiliation, with a strong fondness for certain rastafarian practices.  The three commandments for me:
Love the (supreme being) with all your heart, soul, and mind.
Love your neighbor as yourself (and try to demonstrate same)
Mind your own spiritual business (no judging, preaching, converting, or soul-saving)

I believe the validity of the collective consciousness, quantum physics/alchemy, astrology, meditation, religious individualism, reincarnation, and enlightenment.
I believe religion is politics, the dark end of the spectrum opposite of enlightenment, and that there are going to be a whole hell of a lot of surprised holy-rollers someday soon.  I don't mean that as a judgment, I just think a lot of people have been misled intentionally and unintentionally by listening to the mouth of man  instead of the word of the heart :iloveyou:

I see, you mean like this man:

MOUNT RAINIER, Wash. -- June 4, 2004

A climber loses his life on Mount Rainier, leaving behind a wife and four children.

This is the second death on the mountain in the Liberty Ridge area in just three weeks.

Bellevue firefighter Mark Anderson made it safely to a rescue helicopter, but his climbing partner, Auburn Fire Department Capt. Jon Cahill died after a fall on Mount Rainier.

Climber Alan Hartman called to get help for Anderson and Cahill, setting off a frantic rescue effort.

"We had a climber fall he's injured his back. He had a head injury and then a possible broken arm," the caller said.

Cahill fell 200 feet. He was 11,300 feet up the mountain in the Liberty Ridge area when the accident happened.

God is my religion. God is what all religions have in common but some religions are just plain misguided.

Buddhism is the most pure religion in my oppinion also shamanism is cool
so Buddhism is my choice but i truly beleive in myself.

But Most religions are based on greed. They think only they can go to "so called heaven" but the beautiful place is for all of us... some of us just get their later.

remember religion is meant to bring us together if it doesnt, than its wrong.

Science is good but its dedicated to physical, religion is dedicated to spiritual. All matter is just an illusion (physical manifestations).

One thing science can do is make you a good person, being a good person is more important than anything science can bestow you!

I have my own little religion, call it a speculative theory of metaphysics if you will. I believe that there is "something else", but I make no claim to knowledge of this and reject any claims to knowledge about any properties this thing may or may not have.

There are lots of little reasons why I believe in something else, but the only big one is drugs and consciousness. From my point of view, some of the mental states acheivable with drugs are irreconcilable with a materialist stance - they seem to be so unrelated to matter, of a completely different order. My hypothetical entity could explain this. Remember, at no point am I offering a proof of this system, I am merely giving my evidence for it, which is sufficient to create beliefs for me.

I don't believe that the entity/substance/whatever judges. This is because I am a moral subjectivist. My reasons for being a moral subjectivist are too long to fit in this post, but they resemble the usual criticisms of moral cognitivism. If moral subjectivism is true, as I hold it to be, then good and bad do not exist in any tangible form. This would mean that, for the entity to judge, it would need to "know" about something that doesn't exist on our world, which would be unlikely to say the least.

As for an afterlife, there are two realistic possibilities that I have considered. One is reincarnation, and the other is existence of a totally different order than our current one - probably as part of this entity or otherwise to do with it. I would tend to go for the latter.

My problem with reincarnation is that it brings up infinite regress. Although it is possible that the material world was "always there", it seems counter-intuitive that time is infinite, because where there is time there is change and causality, which requires something before. It would make more sense to me for our universe to have been created from/by something which is outside time and space. This is just a hunch however, and as I stated before, I make no claims to knowledge.

I am somewhat deterministic, but I don't believe that this hampers my free will. I believe in time as a dimension, and so my future is already there. However, until it gets here I have no idea what it is, so I will do what I think I should do and it is a realistic enough illusion of free will for me.

And finally, my meaning of life. I don't like this phrase, because it suggests that life has to have a stated purpose. There is a continuum from simplicity to complexity in the universe, ie things started off as hydrogen and helium, and became life. So, it seems to me that whatever life is actually FOR, is the same question as what the universe is for, which would be answered by the entity, and I don't think we're placed to even attempt to speculate on that.

However, I have a perfectly functioning reason to live. I will live because I am happy, and if I am not happy, I know from experience that happiness is achievable, and therefore I will strive for it.

And to round off - logic holds true throughout the universe. Nothing defies logic, if you think it does, you're using it wrong. Logic may not be able to explain everything but it can reliably tell us what is false.

That was quite fun, I don't think I've ever set all of my beliefs out in front of me. If anyone can find any inconsistencies in all that, please point them out.

I am endeavoring to be the kind of Jew that Jesus was, so what exactly does that make me? The Jews say that I am an apostate - not a Jew at all. I do not fit into any of the denominational 'molds' of today's Christianity. I am undeniably a heretic to Christians. Though I was raised a Jew, was Baptized in a Catholic Church, and took a Master of Theological Studies degree at a Methodist Seminary, I am not recognized by any of these groups. The only 'mold' that I fit well with is the 'Mycelial Mold of MarkostheGnostic.'

Yes dear friends, in these dark times when you can't tell a Baptist from a bigot, a Priest from a Pedophile, or by the same token, a Presbyterian from a pederast, an Anabaptist from an adulterer, a Methodist from a materialist or even a Lutheran from a Luciferian, I wish to be informed personally by God - not Dogma. Yes friends...Dogma... like the 'Ma' [mother] of a dog...is a bitch. The Catholics hate the Protestants, the Protestants hate the Catholics, the Catholics hate the Orthodox, the Orthodox hate the Catholics... and Everyone hates the Jews. God however, has always been good to me.

So when I say that I wish to be personally informed by God, I do not mean to sound presumptuous or special. I have found in this Sphere (to use a Kabbalistic term) - the one furthest from God - the Sphere called 'Malkuth' [the Kingdom], that the lowest common denominator of existence is entropy, and entropy with regard to living creatures is death. But I, like most of you, have discovered that there is Something in this Sphere that Lives on Death and on Decay. From Death and Decay, It imparts Life and Consciousness. It is a small number of living organisms that belong to a greater family of organisms called The Fungi. These 'guys' are not all Fun mind you. The ones that I honor impart Life, but there are those called the 'Angel of Death' and one called 'The Angel of Destruction' who do not bring Life.

As Hippy-leader of The Farm - Stephen Gaskin - once said: 'A man and a mushroom can get together, and each can become greater than before they came together.' The lowliest yet physically largest vegetative life form on Earth (some mycelial bodies weighing thousands of pounds) and the so-called 'Crown of Creation' - [Hu]man - can merge, with the latter 'incorporating' the former, thereby becoming suffused with the former - becoming 'Bemushroomed' and that [Comm]union can magnify the Awareness, the Realization of God by the Human Being.

Imagine, as I have (or look in a full-length mirror), Primordial Man - the Archetype of Humanity - whether in the form of Jesus or in the Kabbalistic Adam Kadmon - standing straight, with arms stretched outward in the form of a Human cross (Large 'T'), then bringing both straight arms up, palms up, over the head - describing an arc. The Human is the stipe, the arc forms the cap, the palms together form the umbo. Now bring your hands, palms together, down in front of your Heart (Small 't'). The symbolic gesture is complete - Head to Heart. 'T' ['t'] is for Truth - the Universal Truth into the individual truth.

And the important part - the essence of the matter - the Teaching. Through the Sacramental use of the Sacred Mushroom, how are you Taught to BE? Have you learned Holy Awe? Have you learned to be humble in the Face of Infinity? Have you seen the follies of Humankind's pathetic quest for social status and worldly power as little more than children showing off or pleasuring themselves or being older schoolyard bullies? Have you seen and laughed, and if so, was it the Luciferian laughter of contempt for the spiritually blind, or was is Joyful Light laughter from your liberation from the social 'matrix?' And most importantly of all - having seen these things - have you learned to BE Compassionate? Yes, then enter in to the [Mush]Room of the Gnostic Redeemer.

Our Church will not have a spire, nor a dome, it will be in the shape of...you guessed it. And folks...you will want to go to Church again, because the Cup of wine will be sweet and will end the service. The Host will be of pressed, powdered Mushroom Dust. You will again enjoy the colors of stained-glass windows. The music will be spacey to heavenly - from Dark Star to J.S. Bach. The Trinity will embody The Father-The Son-The Mother. God will be Known as 'Abwoon' in the Aramaic - Cosmic Mother-Father. We will teach how to Live, which is to say, how to BE, and we will teach how to die - not in fear but in ecstasy. We will 'worship' God as Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Loving Kindness and as Beauty. But we will also 'accept' God as the Author of Wrath, of Judgement, of Power and we will learn to Integrate the Opposites in ourselves, as they are in God. +++Amen+++ Brothers and Sisters +++Amen+++

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

I loaned and lost 'Monday Night Class' to a philosophy teacher, Arthur Lothstein, in the mid 70's. Still have 'Caravan' though. Lothstein's class used to be visited by a hairy freak who I found out was a friend of his - Tuli Kupferburg of The Fugs. I never spoke to the guy unfortunately. In seminary, a doctoral candidate in philosophy had talked with Gaskin while at U. of Tennessee and found him interesting. I thought the books were great at the time, but I remember Chogyam Trungpa refer to Gaskin as "a demonic hippy." This, from a ciggy-smoking, saki-guzzling womanizing trickster (who happened to write good books). What is it with authors who turn out to be dicks? I heard a lecture byThomas Moore in an RC Church, later asked him to sign a book after everyone had left. "I'm not signing books tonight." WTF? I've gotta visit one of these Starwood festivals before they stop happening. I'm a camper - or was, anyway before adulthood took hold of me.

Gnostic Redeemer - I dunno, I think I heard this somewhere. But, between Tiphereth-Beauty/Compassion and Kether-Crown on the Tree of Life, there is the mysterious non-sephirothic sphere of Da'at-Knowledge [Gnosis]. Kind of like the Throat Center [Knowledge-Holding Deities] that lies between the Heart Center [Peaceful Deities] and the Head Center [Wrathful Deities] in Tibetan Buddhist Yoga. So, yeah, Gnosis is salvific, redeeming. The Vicarious Sacrifice metaphor of being 'washed in the Blood of the Lamb' has just never been effective for me. I sought and found another form of Christianity. Fortunately we're not in a 'burning time!'

So, if we build this Mushroomic Church edifice, and I act as first pastor, do you think I should dress like Papa Smurf?
