San Pedro Update - PupCut?
    #2798958 - 06/16/04 02:13 PM (14 years, 11 days ago)

I'm new to gardening and want to share and ask your opinion

The damage on the above picture was from shipping in the winter.
I assume that the flesh affected was frozen.
Is there anything that needs to be done to the brown and hard areas or shall I just leave them be? What accurs to these small outgrowths after time, do they become arms reaching upward like on the main stalk?

This one just began.

These cacti were rooted about a month ago. I assume that fertilizer with a high potash content is favorable?

Looking good?

They seems ok, just leave the hard&brown parts as they are, you might cause more damage if removing them... As to the ferts, on not a expert on that one, but I assume that if they've only been rooted for a month, there's not real need... But I prefer leaving someone else with more knowledge answer on this though...

Your cactus looks fine. As long as all those brown spots are hard and not mushy then they're okay. Those new outgrowths are pups and will grow up like you speculated (like arms). The last pictures looks fine too and it appears there is another pup beginning to form.

As for ferts, if it has roots i'd give it a dose of half strength miracle grow just once this month.

Let the pups grow to 6-8 inches before you cut them off then root them on thier own.

I normally keep only one pup on a plant that has been cut before and remove the other pups (when large enough) to start new plants.

Hope this helps.

>> Pup cut time?

You could if you're impatient or anxious, but it's not hurting anything leaving them on there or cutting them off. It's strictly up to you.

If it were me i'd leave em on there for a while longer until they're bigger just cause that's how i am.

yeah, they both just kinda exploded there...
2 weeks after the pics were taken, they really took off!

Should I cut them?
do I just clean slice where the two meet, dry both wounds then root the pup?

They will grow faster if you leave them on the plant. Wait untill they are at least 10" long and then cut them where they are the smallest near the plant.

Think theyd grow real fast if you cut the top of the cactus off with the pup on it? It would have alot more root space...
