Use of Tyvek in Fruiting Chambers (edit: how much to use?)
    #2792715 - 06/14/04 02:52 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

Here's what I concocted to reduce fungal exposure to mold and other nastiness. How many air exchanges do you think this setup provides daily? Should I go for more surface area? Moisture loss doesn't seem to be a problem yet. My goal is to open the lid as little as is possible (every other day if that). Any comments welcome.

thanks

Yeah, I am definitely going to do that for my fruiting chamber!

Thanks for the kind words. I guess the reason I started this thread was to find out if it could be better. I know that the minimum and ideal levels of air exchange differ greatly. Stamets (or some other authority) says 1-3 exchanges per hour. In my half-assed internet search I couldn't find any information that might help me calculate +/- how much gas is allowed to pass through tyvek. So I pose to you verterans:  Can I gain any further utility if I go for bigger surface area?*

* Yes yes I know. The only way to find out for sure is to try it your self.  :mushroom2:

Looks like a good setup to me. Im not sure how much gas will travel through the tyvek ,but I would imagine you would succesfully evacuate the co2 build up due to the fact that it is somewhat heavier than air and will basically flow out on its own as long as the vents are level with the surface of the substrate.

A friend of mine uses a setup that is kinda supercharged and this is how it works. He first fixed a small vaccum cleaner hepa filter to the upper side of his chamber. He then cut a small hole about an inch and a half into the side of the chamber approximately level with the surface of the substrate. He covered this hole with two layers of tyvek. Although he gets some degree of natural air exchange he wanted to kick it up a bit so he just presses the hose from his vaccum cleaner up to the tyvek hole and presto, supercharged air exchange.
He has had good success with this method in a bulk grow setup, but it probably would deplete the rh way too much for cakes.

Good Luck
MYKEY

I was hoping one of you shroomers would be cool enough to spot this gem. One of my favorites.

As far as the chamber I will probably extend the patches of Ty down to meet the level of the casing on the next try...to make sure that the co2 isn't pooling up. I will report back.
