Battle with Trich - Picture post
    #27987936 - 10/08/22 10:25 AM (2 years, 3 months ago)

Hi all,

this is my first post here and want to share some pics of a grain substrate with some Trich spot (or other contamination). It got green stains on 2 opposites sides, I will start with photo of side 1 (since this one is fully recovered).

I think the Trich was in middle of the substar and manage a way to both sides, I was sad and this event made me found your forum, so that's also why I like to share it with you.

As you can read everywhere here, Trich is a bitch, move it you are done. So I didn't touch anything, just reducing the temp to 23C/74F and wait to see how all of this evolve.

Sometime you just need to reduce temp. and send some love to your mycelium (inspired by Dr Masaru Emoto water theory), also send love to the Trich but explain to it this is not the place to be but you still love it.

Side 1 was less affected and Trich disappear within 2 weeks, Side 2 took  more than 1 month to almost heal, then start fruiting and stop the battle.

This project seems a lost, but at the end it start fruiting very lately, after Cube mycelium finished to eat the Trich one.

Here is Side 1:

Side 2:

Closer view:

It started on the left side, then this part recovered and contamination kept going on the middle of the cake, it's still battling but looking like the end Cubensis wins.

This cake was ready to fruit, technically this take 7-10 days as I understand, all sign was good first week, then it start slowing down and stagnating during the Side 1 recovery, at same time the green stains appeared on side 2 and those was bigger, 1 month after putting it in the fruiting chamber the cake starts to produce but still battling the contamination on side 2.

By the way say hello to Johny Fat cock, it was one of the first to come out.

Today fat cock is going to the dry room

Yes I noticed it only at the end just before it start fruiting, I think I saw some difference around the green like white on white but at the time of discovery it was hard to see.

I already read a lot about the shrooms but it's my first try so I am new to all this.

Trich sporulation before first flush like that would suggest it either came from your spawn or some improperly prepared coir. Most likely your spawn though. Did you put spores to grain?

It smells funky too. Keep letting it fruit, pick and dry fruits that aren't rotten. Don't eat rotten vegetables.

At this time all shrooms look good, but I think this cake did not produce a lot for a 1st flush.

What about the 2cd flush ? If all the green stains are gone, should I put the cake in water, clean it from old shrooms residue and put it back in the tub ?

A lot of that might make it worse really. If the top surface isn't erupting in green trich I'd just let it keep going, rip off what you can. It's gonna rot eventually no matter what. All those things u listed could make it just spread faster. But again wait for more input.

I'm not suggesting to do this because it almost seems wiser to grab some clones/print/swab & cut your losses but wouldn't this be a good candidate for bottom watering to avoid disturbing the contam? I'd probably do like Rumfor says & just let it keep going & let it finish out naturally.

yes I was thinking about this, the stain look strong against contamination. It fights hard and did the job.

Cloning will require to sort mycelium from Verticulum and cube.

So I think taking spore print if the best thing to try ?

In fact it realy did the job, it learns me things and give me some nice eatable shrooms.

I will water bomb it in a hole in the garden. Perhaps a surprise on day

Cloning a fruit will be clean, you take material from the inside of the fruit.

Ok, I keep last shroom to try some agar tomorrow. The cake looks dead, I don't hope for a 2cd flush, I think contams will take it from now.

The green stain is still here and not moving more or less, but since it start fruiting it looks like the Cube stop fighting the Trich. Also I think Verticulum Dry Bubble is starting to spread more. So I will toss this cake.

So I just cover it with water and then toss it in a hole, could I try this inside an empty flowerpot with some soil ?

ok I did few water agar, and a spore print.

The water agar seems ok I think, I wait a few days before posting a pic of them.

I had no time for this so I did some caveman agar. Sterility was not great but I hope ok. Let's see soon.

I am so shameful, here is the process, using some kitchen dish and plastic film to cover them. I did a clean box to work in with few air move, then sprayed with bactericide before working in. Dish for agar was microwaved (yes I know), distilled water was boiled, agar added, then transferred in the dish with paper towel and plastic film on. I put them all in a bag and let them cool down. Then I used the clean box to transfer a part of shroom. Now it looks like shroom part are starting to make mycelium on themselves.

If it fails another fruit is coming for a cleaner process.

Ok so far my shitty water agar's are doing well, it looks like most of all of them are taking.

I am very surprised since I did it likes a caveman with only microwave for the plate and no TC of the agar plate.

No sign of bacteria, it is at  least 4 days since inoculation.

Those are at room temp. 20°C/68°F.

Can someone confirm me that it's looks good ?

if yes I will transfer the best (2 or 5) one with a more clean process.
