ID Request: Probably just mycena, but I’m getting some serious psilocybe vibes * 4
    #27987604 - 10/08/22 07:02 AM (1 year, 5 months ago)

Habitat:
PNW 4000’ Mt. Hood growing amongst moss and decaying wood near the bank of a creek, very damp area

Gills:
Dark brown, attached high on the stipe

Stem:
Thin, white, hollow .75” to 1.5” long, bruising appears to be somewhere between blue brown depending on specimen

Cap:
Shiny, caramel to olive brown with radial lines .25” to 1” wide. Convex when younger, flattening out with age and eventually turning concave. Appears to have pellicle

Spore print color:
Purple brown on foil, doing one on paper now…

Bruising:
Blue to brown, blue appears to only occur on stipe

They look like Panaeolous cinctulus: https://www.shroomery.org/12484/Panaeolus-cinctulus

However the spore print is purple-brown for your shrooms (common for Psilocybe species) and the habitat doesnt match.

These are definitely not Mycena. Im pretty confident you got an active species here. Nice find!

I remember reading back in the day  of Psilocybe Washingtonensis.  Not sure if there is such a thing.  Maybe silvatica?  I’ve never found any.  Definitely hold onto those.

100% not pan cincts for several reasons but perhaps just saying that as have rings? can check if medullosa have annulas (looks like have on few pictures) as may rule that out.

and we are pretty confident in the bruising correct? can try drop of peroxide or alcohol on fresh surface to see if turns blue.

once again hopefully TI will chime in with at least some possibilities.

Definitely holding on to them until TI chimes in. These were near one of my matsutake spots and never in a million years would I think a psilocybe species could be growing in the same area, but these just caught my eye and piqued my attention.

Q-tip is pointing at the area I rubbed with 70% iso alcohol. Looks to be more black than anything.

Wow, that almost seems spot on. I’m guessing the higher elevation could possibly be accounted for by the microclimate next to the creek and the overall warm season.

Thatd be really exciting!

In past years, theres usually at least one person who finds a rare active species or subtype.

This might be your year :yesnod:

This really looks promising, bruising appears to be genuine. It might be elusive Psilocybe silvatica indeed.

Speaking about other possibilities, only Hypholoma, Psathyrella and Deconica come close, but not this close.

Save some specimens for microscopy or even better, sequencing. This collection needs further research.

Psilocybe washingtonenis turned out to be Deconica.

Should I just reach out to a local university about sequencing?

Definitely, if they do that kind of research. Alternatively find a private lab that does it, shouldn't be expensive at all.

What I would recommend is to contact professional mycologist specialized in Psilocybe such as Alan Rockefeller to look at these pictures. If he thinks your mushrooms are active, and can't put a name to them, he's gonna sequence them 300%, or at least inspect them under a microscope. I am not aware of any observations of bona fide silvatica online, so this might be the first one, but I know for a fact they are present in the US because there is genetic evidence, although only from the east coast iirc.
