Coolio, so it looks like pantrops are a lot easier to grow than some would have us believe. Assuming the primordia mature okay (fingers crossed)

The supposed primordia are about twice the size they were (ie 1/2mm as opposed to 1/4mm:)) I spawned some manure with another 1/2 pint of colonised rye today, but I don't have a good feeling about it for some reason. We'll see.....

What is your update?
This weekend is my birthing date on the pan trops. I was wondering if I should mix some manure with my tops or case as is. I was wanting a update from you before I go any further.

Hey Cornbread. Not much happening here at the moment. The suspected primordia on the cased rice grain are still pretty much the same size, maybe stalled out:( The rye spawned manure has colonised very quickly, and was cased yesterday. (so much for my "bad feeling":crazy:) If I was you I would go for spawning dung/manure. The only reason I tried casing grain was I was squeamish about handling poop.:blush: Actually, well composted manure doesn't smell/look any (much) worse than peatbased compost. I'll keep y'all updated.

AFOAF has a small filter patch bag w' bird seed , water, and gypsum and has growth throughout the whole bag, but it is not a realy thick white. It seems as if it is quite whispy but has some fluffy white spots here and there. Will it continue to get denser or should She use it as spawn now?

Well, that's what my spawn was like. I thought it had stalled due to bacteria after shaking, but it seems that's as far as it goes. I suppose it would get denser eventually if left, but once it's let out into frsh air it puffs up very rapidly. I reckon my cased manure will be ready for initiating pinning by tomorrow:) Very fast growing stuff, once it gets going. I like:D

I don't know about the Pan. tropicalis, but it is related to the Pan. cyan. I grew the later on straight rye grain cased with a vary thin layer of Peat:perlite. It produced a massive amount of really small mushrooms. The total yield dry off the first 150 mushroom flush was only 3 grams dry, but then again I only used to cups dry of rye grain. They seem to like high humidity to form pins, but like a very high evaporation rate to develope into shrooms. I don't grow in a terrarium or anyhting of the sort. Just a simple styrofoam cooler with a lid. The lid has a large hole cut in it with syran wrap pinned to it to complete the top, allowing light in. I laid out the colonized grain, cased immediately, and left the lid on till I saw the mycelium peeking through the casing layer. I opened the lid for a good misting and airying out. ( 4 days from casing) Pins started forming at day five, and I left the lid partially off after misting on day six. By day seven I started to harvest.

Heyup Cornbread et al. Well, I'm pleased to say that the tiny white dots were indeed primordia.:)They just sat there for a few days not doing anything, so yesterday, following teonan's observation on high evaporation, I misted heavily then left the casing sitting on my desk, sans terrarium, and with a 60w lightbulb shining from a distance of about 10cm. I left it like this until the casing was looking a bit dryish, misted lightly and returned to terarrium. Today several of the primordia are now pins about 3mm long and growing fast. Woohoo!
The cased rye/manure has totally overrun the casing but no sign of primordia. I'm cold shocking it as I speak(type:)

cool beans! I have not did anything yet but have it colonized. My petri dish that I have a culture going has pins all over it. I did not even case it. I have a contaminate growing on the plate also. I am just going to throw it in a terrarium and see what happens. I did not think you needed any poop:) I am glad to here of your luck.

If you have a lot of surface area that can create pins but a thin layer of spawn underneath it, you'll get a bunch of tiny mushrooms that can't produce a significant amount of spores. To get rid of this problem, just make sure your spawn is at least 3" deep before casing. Make sure you're careful with keeping the spawn in semi-sterile conditions Pan cyan/trop spawn can easily contaminate.

Thats cool I am just going to case it without any poop to spawn and I like deep substrates to get the biggest fruits. This will be about 3" deep. Thanks alot for the input excited about these. My culture (petri dish) Its is pinning but has a contaminate on it. I am going to cut the contaminate out and put in the fruiting chamber and see what happens.

Maan, my cased rye/dung just will not pin. There's a patch in the middle of the casing that is completely covered in myc and rest is heading that way. Any advice? More casing or scratch?
btw the shrooms on the cased rice are about 1" now, definitely not aborts:)

What colour does pantrop mycelium bruise? Please say greenyblue rather than cubensis blueyblue. If not, then what I thought was a patch of really thick mycelium is actually a HUGE Penicillium mould. In fact, I'm pretty certain it is. Daaaaaaaaamn! Can't wait for it to sporulate....:(
On a happier note, the pans on the cased rice are about 3" tall now and still going strong. Seem to be growing quite a bit slower than I recall Ralphster's growing though.

Pan trops on plain rice cased with potting soil. The tallest one is barely 3" tall. Awwww.:) I think I'll reduce the rH and try and get the caps to expand and sporulate. I owe Ralphster a few prints;)
