First monotub grow logs
    #27975923 - 09/30/22 09:54 PM (2 years, 3 months ago)

Hi guys, been reading your forum for quite a bit before jumping into mycology. I love all the information you have here!

I am a complete newbie to this, so I had decided to buy a grow kit for my first grow. It basically had premade brf cakes for pf tek, humidifier, lights, air pump, filter, etc...all the shit that I now know are useless lol.

Instead of sticking with pf tek and cakes, I want to end up breaking apart my cake and set up cvg monotubs.  Everything is here and waiting to be mixed.

Anyway, I inoculated my first brf cakes on 8/27. 9 jars of golden teacher, 9 jars of amazonian.

I had 2 of my golden teachers contam, one never grew anything, one completely filled with cobweb mold with no mycelium growth. The third had blue-green mold at the top which I scraped off and am trying to do a little side experiment with that one since the mycelium fully grew.

For my others, the last jar had engulfed the cake completely last Saturday 9/24. I have read to wait a week before birthing, so this weekend should? be the time.

I've noticed a lot of my jars have what look like cobweb mold clinging to the glass along with a lot of condensation. I'm hoping it is overgrowth of mycelium (please tell me this is not contam).

If everything looks good and healthy, do they look ready to be birthed?

Do I still do a 24 hour soak on the cakes even though I am doing a monotub?

Thanks for the read everyone!

You know I tried to click a pick to inspect then it took me to another sight you used to upload and I still couldn't zoom on the image. For the most part those look like they might be ok but without being able to zoom couldn't really tell you. Also I haven't read OP yet so I'll go back and read that now.

Edit: ok I went back and read the OP. I really don't have any answers for you I've never spawned BRF to coir.
I can tell you if you had contams in the other jars and used the same innoculant on those as the others I'd just fruit as is instead of spawning to coir.
Also I am just guessing here but I'd say no on the soaking if you are going to spawn to coir since the coir should contain all the moisture needed.

Sorry about that, didn't see a forum image uploader until after you had posted. Images should be working correctly now.

I broke up 4 of my 1/2 pint jars per shoebox.

If those are pre-made jars the chances of it all going to shit is extremely high. If I had those jars(which look good by the way)  I would use smaller boxes. That way if one or two go bad you aren't completely wiped out.

No need to dunk them if you are going to be breaking them up.  The coir holds the h20 for the shrooms. I used a cheese grater to break mine up.

Good luck and welcome to the Shroomery!

Thanks for the info guys.

Since the amazonian are all good, I'm going ahead with a monotub for them.  For the 6 gts I'll do regular pf tek.

Not sure if anyone else has tried this, but instead of breaking the cakes up I had cut my cakes into 1/8th inch slices, sort of like large pepperonis. I did a layer of sub, covered it completely with my cake slices, another layer of sub, continuing until all my cake slices were used.

9/30 my tubs were made

10/4

10/5

In a day the growth has pretty much doubled.  Super excited to see how it continues!

Hello again!

I have some fruits. But some of my fruits have very dark caps. I plucked one, and the interior is hollow and a little slimy. Is this wet rot? I also noticed it is no longer dry around my monotub holes. Is it caused from not enough fae?

*Edit* so after reading and reading, some people say that's normal for aborts. Some people say it's Verticillium. Both reasons stem from fae. Drilled a couple more holes in the tub and hope everything turns out OK.

Any insight to this? Stems very brown, one was completely opened with the veil broken so I picked it. The stem was hollow.  Is this Verticillium???

Yes, very likely bacterial. You're right, prob not enough FAE. As long as you make tea or dry them, they are still fine to consume :mushroom2:

I'd say maybe make two or three more holes per side to add some FAE for your next flush. Glad it did pull through

Thanks for the reply. I had drilled a couple new holes the night I saw the blackening aborts. There were a couple more ready to be harvested last night. Both had healthy full stems!

These fruits were grown on chunks of brf cakes that I had placed on top of my sub as a little experiment.

Now that I have good fae, how long would it take for primordia to start? The tubs were colonized 14 days ago, fully colonized for about 5. I used pastywhytes ezdial tub guide so they went straight into fruiting conditions.

Other than the buried cake pieces, the rest of my substrate has yet to show any pins.

You might have more pins come right after, but it also might wait a couple days. I wouldn't spray anymore unless the sides of the tub is getting dry

Getting quite a few pins now, a lot of them aborting.. aborts are caused from not enough fae still?

Spotty growth can come with MS culture, but it might be from the cakes being sliced too. I'm glad they are pulling through yo!
