Mushroom ID - South Australia
    #2794306 - 06/15/04 08:22 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Hi all

I'm a bit of a beginner to this, and need a bit of help IDing some mushrooms a friend picked today... I made him to leave me one to try and figure out if they were safe.

They were growing in medium density eucalypt scrub with some cleared grassy patches in the Adelaide hills. The spore print there isn't the best, I'm leaving it over night to try and get a better one but it seems to be a chocolate brown colour on close inspection.

They stained to a blackish colour within about 10 minutes of handling and continued to darken over the next hour to a uniform black, maybe with hints of blue but it's hard to say. They probably measured 2-3cm across the caps and up to 10cm high. The colour on top of the cap was a tan/fawn colour but quite rich, almost gold, although that darkened a lot as well after they were handled. The smell was a stronger, damper version of what common edible mushrooms smell like, but a little more musty... I think damp is definately the best word. The stems were slightly fibrous and hollow, and when squeezed there was a bit of clear liquid. Caps were quite smoothly curved but with a noticable point or nipple.

Thanks in advance!

Closeups of the stem bruising. The first picture was after light handling, the last about half an hour after I squeezed the stem.

I think my mate got about 30 or 40. I made him leave me the one the pictures are of, to identify... but I think I'll keep it if it turns out to be a psilocybe

i said it on bluelight, and i'll say it again... i don't think it's a psilo... i've only ever found ONE subaeruginosa which hasn't bruised an obvious blue, and it was found in the bush underneath a fern on eucalypt mulch - and was in very poor condition.

arrr i can't believe 2 of you guys said "it seems to be a sub"... i know some people would eat a mushroom based on such an ID :\ not safe!

I'd have to say, it COULD be a sub, but it's one of the most iffy ones i've ever seen, and as such, i'd leave it alone. It looks a lot too purple for my likings, and the stem I would say is too thin for how long it is.

On closer inspection i'm almost certain it isn't a sub.

Thanks for the info, I'll pass it on. What colour would you expect the spore print from a subaeruginosa? The 2nd print I took from this one is clearly a rich chocolate brown.

it looks like a sub to me, but the bruising is a bit strange. Also have you got any photos of the top of the mushroom, i'm no expert and subs do vary but to me that cap looks a bit off. It would have been better if you had the rest of the shrooms to photograph, it could be just this one mushroom that looks strange.

Is the stem shiny-like at all? The subs i found had shiny stems.
The surest way to identify it is to check for blue bruising and make a sporeprint, just cut the cap off and place a white piece of paper under it, leave it for a few hours so that there is a strong spore print (not just a faint one) if it is a dark brown/violet-purple-ish colour and it bruises blue i reckon it's a sub.

Unfortunately I haven't picked anything myself or I'd be able to supply more info... I'm just trying to make sure my friend doesn't eat anything poisonous at the moment.

id say thats a sub, most mine have white stems with blue stains only the occasional off-few have brown stems like that.
Those photos are weird, on the close up of the stem i can see red and purple?? maybe its just me though
on the second photo it looks like the caps margin is staining the paper blue
only my 2 cents though.

Yeah on the spore prints, the edges of the cap has stained the paper a violet blue colour in places...

I'll have to try and get some more photos.
