Ready for g2g?
    #27979421 - 10/03/22 11:39 AM (2 years, 3 months ago)

Seems I have a good jar, so I want to move it to 3 others.  Am I missing contam because I don't see it?  I shook 3 days ago from 25% and this is where it's at.  The myc took off at light speed.

I do see a bit of condensation at the top of the jar, but no yellow/orange throughout the rest.  I also dont see any wet/pressed grains.

When is the best time to g2g?  Is this ready?  Do I need to wait for more colonization?

Thanks!

Here are picts of the 4 sides of the jar:

If the mycelium took off at light speed following a shake, contamination likely isn't an issue. In my experience and based on previous scouring of the forums you'll see stunted colonization with contamination.

Those don't appear to be fully colonized so waiting isn't going to hurt. If your overly anxious to get on with it I think g2g would be fine at this point providing you follow the golden rule, good sterile technique.

It is recommended to wait for full colonization before G2G.
That being said I have G2G before full colonization with no problems.

G2G with Oats is risky but if that's what you want to do definitely give the jar another shake or two. When the myc covers all the grains equally post another picture, your jar is not at 100% colonization yet.

Healthy cube mycelium on Grain is typically thinner and whispier. When it is bright white thick and ropey IME it has almost always been bacterial. I have had a few clones in the past that were more rizomorphic but most of the time were quite whispy. Looks about right to me for 3 days recovery

Why exactly is it risky to G2G oats? This is news to me.

Thanks - that is what I wanted to know.  I will allow it to colonize further and will do one more shake tonight.

Yeah, I am moving to agar - I have 50+ poured plates that I will be inoculating one day this week with mss.  Between the time it will take to get clean agar to from a2g, I hope to have 3 tubs of fruiting in progress.

Yeah, those jars definitely don't look contaminated, but they also don't look fully colonized.  I would wait until they look more like what you see below.  This game is all about patience.

I do g2g using oats. Its same as any other whole grain imo, just be meticulous about hydration and sterilization... same as any other grain process.

I'll agree that those jars don't seem to be at the "fully colonized" looking stage that I'd be wanting to see them at to do a g2g. I'm kinda on the fence looking at them, possibly looking bacterial. Few more days of observation is in order.

OMG - those look absolutely fantastic.  Congrats!  Thanks for showing me what it needs to look like.  That's helpful.

I am also working on understanding how to dial a tub so that I am ready for quart jars.  I shredded pf cakes into a 7qt container with coir.  Good grief, this hobby is a massive learning curve.... but the right tools sure help and the people's willingness to share is invaluable.

Thanks.  Yup - bacteria is certainly possible.  This is mss ...  The jar has been pretty clear up to now - there are no wet grains stuck to the glass, no myc piss and the grains move as individuals.

I ran a total of 10 grain jars. I only used .5-1cc per jar to stretch what I had and to have enough for agar.

8 never colonized and the oats look very good to me - they roll as individual grains, appear to be nice and dry and the jars are perfectly clear... no condensation or slime at all.  So, I am hopeful, but know it could as easily go tits up.  If there is contam, I will know before g2g and perhaps can still fruit this one jar in it's own 7qt tub.

Dialing in is very simple. The idea is to give as much fresh air as possible without drying it out. This can be done very easily in many ways from fanning by hand to more passive ways such as drilling holes or cracking the lid a bit. You want little beads of water on the surface of the substrate at all times. once dried out it can be difficult to get it to bead like before and excessive misting can cause matting which makes it harder to gauge surface moisture. Watch it closely for the first week after full colonization If the beads start getting smaller give it less air as that means it is evaporating too fast. Less passive FAE can be achieved in many ways as well such as taping up holes adding layers of micropore tape tightening polyfill putting the lid on tight ect. What type of fruiting chamber do you plan on using? Also what is the ambient RH in the grow room? With this information we can help you get pretty close to dialed in right off the bat and you shouldn't have to tweak much to get it dialed in. Lets get an update on how those jars are coming along today!

Thanks!  I'll post pictures tomorrow morning.  The jar I shook has recovered very well and I will have to make the choice of spawning it or g2g into 4 other grain jars I have prepped.  I shot mss to 20 plates this Tues, so I have time to play until my agar/a2g process takes over.

If I spawn the one, I plan to use a 7qt tub and mix 1:3 with straight coir (which I already have prepped.)  If I do g2g, I plan to use a 67qt tub for the 4 that will colonize and I will have to make up more coir to get 1:3.

Right now, I have 2 7qt tubs I shredded brf cakes into and mixed with coir and then put a 1/2" layer of straight coir on top to practice.  It is not going as well as I'd hoped.

I need to learn (among many other thnigs):

When spawned and mixed, do I then put a 1/2" layer of fc coir on top?
Do I keep the lid tight on the tub with no fae until full colonization of the spawn/coir and then intro FAE for fruiting?  Or do I start with fae straight away?  Right now, my tubs are all unmodified and I was hoping to keep it that way.

I have read too many threads. :frown:

Here is the state of the most colonized jar.  I want to g2g, but I also want to get some fruit going! It looks great to me, but maybe I am missing something. I will let it colonize further before making a choice.

Here is a cake that would be on it's 3rd flush.  It previously fruited in a tub of pearlite, but I wanted to try something else.... so I put it in coir after a dunk and in a ziplock bag.  It's going nuts colonizing the coir!  But, I don't see any pins.  The bag has tons of holes poked in it and I have the top open 1 inch, but no fruiting.  I am not quite sure what to change at this point.

And, here are the two 7qt tubs I have going.  These were brf cakes that I dunked and shredded and mixed 2:1 with fc coir.  The myc seems to be ccolonizing - although the process seems to have slowed just a bit.  Initially I had the lids off-center by a 1/4", but the surface droplets disappeared pretty quickly. After 3 days, I closed the lids to try something different and now the surface seems correct, but the growth is not as vigorous. The tubs are unmodified.  Again, this is to practice before the grain jars move to tubs.

If it is a real casing wait till full colonization if its a pseudo casing (cvg,cv or c) then put it on when you spawn.

If you are using an unmodified tub then keep the lid on till full colonization.

You might be able to get away with G2G that jar. Looks a tad Bacterial to me but may not be. If it was mine I would spawn it and wait and make transfers from the plates to make sure it is clean before making a master jar.

That cake has used alot of its nutes already. In the future don't spawn used cakes to new coir. Just find a nice shady spot outside and start dumping all your spent subs and cakes there.

Next time leave the lid on while it is colonizing. To me they look a little dry and might be why it has stalled.

Find one tek and follow it to a T. Many of the TCs have great grow logs to follow. Frank pasty cronicr and bod just to name a few have really great relevant info from 2013-Current. Or you could just UTSF and make sure you click the TC box, Filter posts from 4 years and current as well as clicking the box that says show one post per thread. You will easily find a current up to date grow log to follow.

Ready to spawn or should I wait a bit more. I've decided to take this to a tub (as long as someone doesn't come along and tell me it's got to be tossed!!)

I plan to do an unmodified 7qt tub 1:3 straight coir.

Very likely bacterial.

No need to toss you prob will get fruits in a tub. Maybe do 1:2 spawn:sub ration to be on the safe side. 1:3 is also fine.
