Did you case? Or just top layer?
I had blob issues on PF cakes, but never issues with my cased tub. I’d add a little between flushes too.
If you wanted to case, you could.

Booo top layer 😒

Yaaaaay no top layer 😏

So I know top layers are preferred I'm not trying to say they're wrong. But ime they're just more work for nothing. The top layer tubs took all sorts of misting and babysitting. The no top layer tubs are just mix, compress, set and forget, no misting. Maybe I'm not doing top layers right but even if it was that they're still more work. All these tubs came from the same T4 plin plate that came from a clone. It's only ever performed like the no top layer tubs.

I used a top layer as a psuedo casing. Compacted the crap out of it. Guess I didn't think APE was prone to blobbing. No worries I like blobs too.

Hmm I'll definitely try a couple with no top layer. I've left it out in the past mostly out of laziness but didn't really pay attention to how they performed compared to no top layer. Another reason I'm trying to get back into keeping a myco journal. It just seems hard to find time for writing in a journal. I'm always grinding one way or another so free time can be hard to find.

First flush from a Golden Teacher plate pin clone. Waited a little too long so there were tons of spores.

12 month old PE6 LC finally taking off. This one took about 6 days to show any growth. I did use it pretty quickly out of the fridge instead of letting it wake up over a couple days, though. Looking good so far

Nice.
I don't know why people think fridge cultures, liquid or not, need to warm up. They'll warm up on the agar or grain you put them on. If that is room temp, that's the same temp your culture will be if you let it gradually let it warm to roommate.
It's not going to shock and harm it if you pour it on room temp anything. (not ranting at you, I'm ranting at the people you're addressing. I see a lot of that on here.)

Nice tubs rum.
I do feel like genetics can play a pretty big role in whether you use a top layer or not. Clearly your genetics definitely don’t need one but I do find a decent difference in some of the stuff I’ve run.
But dope tubs dude!

Thanks! I've done PE6, Mazatepec, Lizard King, AA+(These tubs), PES Hawaiian all with no top layers and with top layers. The no top layers were always better pinsets with less work.

Here’s my main difference between no top layer and a thick one on the same culture. The first pic is none. A lot fatter and denser mushrooms, but fewer overall. But the thick top layer gave me more even growth.
I like to run my new cultures side by side with different top layers and for the most part I do like top layers. But shit if the no top layers work, keep at it!

Those look nice! PE variety I'm guessing? If so that would be one I'd definitely use a top layer too. It's definitely been proven they do better with it.

I'd like to see a side by side with the same culture. One using a top layer in combination with patching and one using the old school frosting method where you sprinkle colonized spawn over the top after spawning and mixing.

Are we talking top layer at spawning, or top layer as in pseudo casing after colonization?

So I know top layers are preferred I'm not trying to say they're wrong. But ime they're just more work for nothing. The top layer tubs took all sorts of misting and babysitting. All these tubs came from the same T4 plin plate that came from a clone. It's only ever performed like the no top layer tubs.
Noice comparison - I notice with the top layer you're only getting growth around the outer edges. This makes me think that with the top layer your surface conditions are unfavorable (you mentioned misting etc which is never an issue for myself), maybe too thin of a top layer is leading to drying out due to your tub setup? I think an appropriate sized top layer, at appropriate field capacity, paired with a tub setup that supports that top layer is the key.
Not trying to be all #teamtoplayer hahah but definitely too many variables.
"Maybe I'm not doing top layers right but even if it was that they're still more work"
100% not true when all ideal man, tis just your experience with it.
